Google Chrome themes govern how Google Chrome looks and feels — and fortunately, the developers of Google Chrome have made finding, installing, and changing them fairly simple. By changing a Google Chrome theme, you can alter everything from tab backgrounds to colors and designs of tabs and your bookmark bar.

Finding Themes in the Google Chrome Web Store

You can find thousands of themes for your Chrome browser in Google's official Chrome Web Store. All of the Google Chrome themes are free to download, so just take your pick. On the main Themes page, you'll find many categories of themes, such as Enchanting Places, Dark and Black Themes, Space Exploration, and Editor's Picks.

Once you find a theme you like, installing it is easy:

  1. In Chrome, click the three vertical dots at the top right of your screen.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. On the page that appears, scroll down to Appearance. Click on Themes > Open Chrome Web Store. A new tab will open.

  4. You can learn more about each theme by clicking its thumbnail.

  5. To install one, click Add to Chrome.

  6. If you decide not to keep the theme you just installed, click Undo.

That's it: Your theme has been installed, and your browser window should update to reflect its colors and other specs.

Things to Note

Before deleting the custom theme in Chrome, keep in mind that you aren't given a confirmation box or any sort of last minute "change your mind" option. After passing through step 3, the theme is immediately gone.

How to Uninstall a Google Chrome Theme

When you install a new theme, the old one is automatically overwritten; however, if you want to uninstall the custom theme altogether and not install a new one, you can revert Chrome back to its default theme:

  1. Access chrome://settings/ through Chrome's URL bar, or use the menu button (the three vertical dots) to open Settings.

  2. Find the Appearance section.

  3. Click Reset to default theme.
