How Do I Change My Nickname on Google Home?

First, download the Google Home app for Android or iOS. Then, follow the steps below to change your Google Home name.

Although the instructions and screenshots below are for iOS devices, the process is virtually identical on Android. Since the Google Home app is only available for Android, iPhone, and iPad, you'll need to download the Android emulator for Windows if you want to change your name using a PC.

  1. Download the Google Home app from the App Store or Google Play Store.

  2. Open the app and select which device's name you’d like to change.

If you don’t see any of your Google Home devices, make sure that you are signed in to the Google Account linked to your speaker or display by tapping your account photo in the top-right of the screen.

  3. Tap the Settings icon in the top-right (represented by a gear icon) of the device screen.

The steps to change the name of your Google Home device

You cannot change the name your Google Home device responds to when using voice commands. Changing your Google Home name will only change how the device is identified on your home network. You will still need to activate it by saying “Hey, Google” or “Okay, Google.”

Why Give Google Home a Nickname?

The Google Home app lets you change the name of individual Google Home devices if you have multiples in your home and need to identify them quickly. Examples of hardware you can rename are Google Home, Google Home Mini, Google Nest Mini, Google Home Max, Google Nest Audio, Google Nest Hub, and Google Nest Hub Max.

By default, your Google Home is named XXX room Home. This generic name may not be an issue if you only have one device in your home, but you may want to change it for a more personalized experience or if you have multiple units around the house.

Fortunately, changing the nickname of your Google Home is quite straightforward. You only need to download the Google Home app and be connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the device you want to edit.
