Changing Gmail passwords on an Android device or an iPhone is a fairly easy process.

You might want to reset or change your Gmail password for several reasons. For example, setting a new Gmail password is something you should do regularly for security's sake. Perhaps you're worried that someone got their hands on your credentials and hacked your account, or maybe you'd just like to use a new password that's more secure or easier to remember.

These instructions apply to devices running Android 4.4 and later or iOS 11 and newer.

Changing Your Gmail Password on an Android Device

Take the following steps to change your Gmail password on an Android smartphone or tablet.

  1. Open Gmail, and log in if necessary.

  2. Tap the menu button in the upper left-hand corner (look for three horizontal lines).

  3. When the drop-down menu appears, scroll down and select Settings.

  4. The Settings screen should now be displayed. Tap your Gmail address.

  5. Select Manage your Google Account.

  6. The Google Account interface should now be visible. Tap Personal Info.

  7. Tap Password.

  8. Type in your current Gmail password and tap Next.

  9. Enter your desired new password twice: once in the New password field, and again in the Confirm new password field.

  10. Tap Change Password to complete the process.

How to Change Your Gmail Password on iPhone

Take the following steps to change your Gmail password on an iPhone or another iOS device.

  1. Open the Gmail app and log in.

  2. Tap the menu button, represented by three horizontal lines and located in the upper left corner.

  3. When the menu appears, scroll to the bottom and select Settings.

  4. Tap your Google email address, located near the top of the Settings screen.

  5. Select the Manage your Google Account option, located in the Account section.

  6. On the Google Account screen, tap Security immediately under your email address.

    You may have to swipe across the top of the screen to locate the Security heading.

  7. Tap Password in the Signing in to Google section.

  8. Type your current Gmail password and tap the Next button.

  9. Enter your desired new password twice, once in the New password field, and again in the Confirm new password field.

  10. Tap Change Password to complete the process. You'll see a confirmation screen that your password has changed.

What If I Forget My Current Gmail Password?

If you don't know your current Gmail password, the steps above do not work because you're asked for your password before making any changes. In this case, you should recover your Gmail password.
