Arial for all purposes? It can get a little … boring. How about Courier New, Georgia, Comic Sans, or Verdana instead?

In AOL Mail, you can choose from these fonts and others as your default and pick a default size and foreground color to boot to add a little personality to your outgoing emails.

Change the Default Mail Font in AOL Mail

To change the font, font color, and font size used by default for new messages in AOL Mail:

  1. Follow the Settings link in AOL Mail.
  2. Go to the Compose category.
  3. Pick the desired font, font size, and font color under Default Font and Color.
  4. Click Save.

The next time you compose an email, it will use the new font defaults you set up. You can change them manually one email at a time if you want to.

Add Rich Text to Your Emails

If you want to make a bigger impact than you see by changing the default font, switch to Rich Text HTML formatting in AOL Mail. When you turn on Rich Text HTML formatting, you can underline, use bold and italic, easily create bulleted lists, and color both the text and the background. To turn on Rich Text HTML formatting:

  1. Click Settings.
  2. Go to the Authoring category.
  3. Check Use Rich Text/HTML Editing under Composing.
  4. Click Save

Because not all email clients can display HTML-formatted messages, AOL Mail also produces a plain text version of each rich text message that you send. It is displayed to recipients who cannot view HTML-formatted emails.
