How to Change the Default Font in Outlook Mail on the Web

You can change the default font (and size) for new messages in Outlook Mail on the Web.

Just One Change

Do you routinely change the font when you start composing an email in Outlook Mail on the Web or Windows Live Hotmail? You may have some adapting to do if you take up Outlook Mail on the web on its offer to make the changes permanent.

With the default font face, size, color and formatting set to your favorite picks, you will spend less time on the layout for each message—but you can still format each message, paragraph and letter as you like, of course.

Change the Default Font in Outlook Mail on the Web

To select a custom font, font size and formatting for new messages you start composing in Outlook Mail on the web:

  1. Click the settings gear icon () in the top navigation bar in Outlook Mail on the web.
  2. Select Options from the menu that has appeared.
  3. Go to the Mail | Layout | Message format category.
  4. To change the font for new emails:
    1. ​Click the current font (the Outlook Mail on the web default is Calibri) in the formatting toolbar under Message font.
    2. Select the desired font from the menu that has appeared.
  5. ​To change the default font size:
    1. Click the current size (the Outlook Mail on the web default is 12) in the formatting toolbar under Message font.
    2. Select the desired size from the menu.
  6. ​To change formatting attributes for the default for new messages:
    • ​Click the Bold button under Message font to turn boldness on or off.
    • Click the Italics button to toggle italics.
    • Click the Underline button to add or remove an underline.
      • ​Use the underline with caution; underlines make text harder to read and are not well suited for a default choice.​​
  1. ​​​To change the default font color:
    1. ​Click the Font color button under Message font.
    2. Select the desired color from the menu.
      • ​​Use colors other than black, grey and possibly dark blue with caution.
  2. ​​Click Save.

Change the Default Font in Outlook.com

To pick a custom default font for new emails you are composing in Outlook.com:

  1. Click the settings gear icon () in your Outlook.com top navigation bar.
  2. Select Options from the menu that has appeared.
  3. Follow the Formatting, font and signatures link under Writing email.
  4. To change the font for new messages:
    1. ​Click the Change Font button under Messaage font.
    2. Select the desired font from the menu that has appeared.
  5. ​To change the default font size:
    1. ​Click the Change font size button under Message font.
    2. Select the desired size in points from the menu that has shown.
  6. ​To change formatting attributes for the Outlook.com default font:
    • ​Click the Bold button under Message font to toggle boldness.
    • Click the Italics button to turn on or off italicization.
    • Click the Underline button to add or remove an underline.
  7. ​​​To change the color for the font used for new emails in Outlook.com:
    1. ​Click Change font color under Message font.
    2. Select the desired color from the menu that has appeared.
      • ​​Use colors other than black, grey and possibly dark blue with caution.
  8. ​​Click Save.

Change the Default Font in Windows Live Hotmail

To customize the default font for writing messages in Windows Live Hotmail:

  1. Select Options | More options… in Windows Live Hotmail.
  2. Follow the Message font and signature link under Writing email.
  1. Use the toolbar to pick the desired font face, formatting, size and color under Message font.
  2. Click Save.
