How to Change an Apple Watch Face

One of the best aspects of a digital smartwatch is the ability to change its watch face when it begins to feel a bit stale. The Apple Watch not only allows you to change the style of your watch face, but also customize its functionality with different bits of digital information such as your calendar, fitness stats, weather, and more. Follow this guide to get your Apple Watch face precisely how you would like it.

The Digital Crown is Apple's name for the flat scroll wheel on the side of your Apple Watch — it can be rotated and clicked inward to make selections.

Add a Change to a New Apple Watch Face

Want to create an entirely new Apple Watch face? The options below allow you to make your new selection from either your watch itself or your iPhone.

From the Apple Watch

Follow these steps to add a new Apple Watch face directly from your wrist.

  1. Starting on the watch screen, press firmly down on the display.

  2. Next, swipe your finger from right to left until you access the New (+) watch face screen.

  3. Tap the +.

  4. Use the Digital Crown to scroll up and down, through the various watch faces available.

  5. When you have selected a watch face you want, tap the screen to select it.

From the iPhone

Follow these steps to add a new Apple Watch face using the Watch app on your iPhone.

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.

  2. Select the Face Gallery tab at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Scroll through the various watch faces available.

  4. When you see a watch face you want, tap the screen to select it.

  5. Tap ADD on the screen to add the watch face.

Regardless of how you set up the new watch faces, you can simply swipe across the screen of the current watch faces to change to a different one. For example, you might have one that is simply the time and another for when you are exercising.

Customize Your Apple Watch Face

Once you have selected an Apple Watch face, you may want to customize with information relevant to your interests such as weather, fitness information, and your personal calendar. The options below allow you to accomplish the task from either your Apple Watch or the Watch app on your iPhone.

From the Apple Watch

Follow these steps to customize an Apple Watch face from your wrist.

  1. Starting on the watch screen, press firmly down on the display.

  2. Swipe left or right to navigate to the watch face you would like to customize.

  3. Tap Customize under the watch face.

  4. Swipe left or right to highlight different features such as the color of the second hand or the animation of the background, depending on your selected watch face — then scroll through the available options with the Digital Crown.

  5. Swipe to the last page in the Customization settings to access the different watch face complications. Tap on a particular complication, and use the Digital Crown to make your selection.

  6. Once finished, press the Digital Crown to save your changes.

From the iPhone

Follow these steps to customize an Apple Watch face using the Watch app on your iPhone.

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.

  2. Select the My Watch tab at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Under the My Faces heading, tap on the watch face you wish to customize.

  4. At the top of the screen, under the Color heading, select the color you wish to customize the watch face.

  5. Under the Complications heading, select each complication location, and scroll through the list to make your selection.

  6. Click the < My Watch option in the upper-left corner of the screen to save your changes and return to the main screen of the Watch app.

Delete an Apple Watch Face

No longer in love with a particular watch face? You can quickly delete any Apple Watch faces directly from your wrist my firmly pressing on the display, then swiping up on the watch face, and selecting Remove.

If you're on your iPhone, you can do the same by accessing the My Watch tab and selecting Edit next to your watch faces — tap the red-minus to delete the watch face. It's that simple.
