Digital camera technology has undergone a series of changes in the past few years, as smartphone cameras take control of the lower end of the market -- squeezing out point and shoot cameras -- and camera makers focus on advanced models that provide outstanding image quality. But the digital camera announcements at CES 2016 focused on new technologies and enhancements that will make digital photography even more enjoyable in the next few years.

Listed below is a summary of the new digital cameras and photography technologies companies announced leading up to and during the CES 2016 trade show in Las Vegas!


Canon has announced five new digital cameras in conjunction with CES 2016.

  • PowerShot ELPH 180. You may be able to find the ELPH 180 at less than $100, as this compact camera has 20MP of resolution and an 8X optical zoom lens.
  • PowerShot ELPH 190 IS. The inexpensive and compact ELPH 190 has 20MP of resolution for still images and a 10X optical zoom lens.
  • PowerShot ELPH 360 HS. The thin ELPH 360 has a 12X optical zoom lens and 20.2MP of resolution.
  • PowerShot SX420 IS. Canon's SX420 IS camera has a 42X optical zoom lens and can record still images at 20MP of resolution.
  • PowerShot SX540 HS. The SX540 has a 50X optical zoom lens with 20.3 megapixels of resolution.

Drone Photography

The natural mix of drones and photography were a key component of CES 2016 announcements.

  • AEE Technology. AEE Technology introduced its AP12 and AP20 Quadcopter drones. The AP12 can fly for 25 minutes and shoot 1080p HD video at 60 fps, while the AP20 will be able to record 4K resolution video at 30 fps. Pricing was not announced during CES 2016.
  • DJI. DJI announced the Phantom 3 4K, which includes 4K video resolution in a Wi-Fi enabled drone that can fly for 25 minutes. And the company revealed the Inspire 1 Pro Black drone, which includes a Micro Four Thirds camera.


Fujifilm announced four new digital cameras just after CES 2016.

  • X-70. Fujifilm's X-70 is a fixed lens camera with an APS-C sized image sensor and 16.3 megapixels of resolution.
  • X-E2S. This mirrorless ILC offers a 16.3MP APC-C sized image sensor and an electronic viewfinder.
  • X-Pro2. The mirrorless ILC X-Pro2 has a hybrid viewfinder, allowing you to switch between an optical viewfinder and an electronic viewfinder.
  • XP90. This is the latest waterproof camera from Fujifilm, operating in up to 50 feet of water depth successfully.


Nikon had several camera announcements related to CES 2016.

  • D5. The new D5 DSLR is one of Nikon's greatest DSLR cameras offered to date, providing 20.8MP of resolution in a full frame image sensor with a 153-point autofocus system.
  • D500. A new DSLR from Nikon, the D500, offers a DX-format image sensor with 20.9 megapixels of resolution and an impressive 10 frames per second burst mode shooting.
  • KeyMission 360. This innovative camera provides 360-degree video recording at 4K resolution along with still images. It's also waterproof up to 100 feet.
  • SB-5000 Speedlight. The latest external flash unit from Nikon, the SB-5000 Speedlight, is Nikon's first radio-controlled flash.
  • Lenses. Nikon has announced a pair of 18-55mm zoom stepping motor lenses for its DSLR line of cameras.


Olympus unveiled a new lens and its latest tough waterproof camera during CES 2016.

  • Lens. Olympus is offering a new 300mm f/4 telephoto lens for its mirrorless camera line that weighs less than 3 pounds.
  • TG-870. The TG-870 will work in up to 50 feet of water depth. It offers 16MP of resolution and a next-generation GPS location technology.


During CES 2016, Panasonic announced a new lens and two new compact travel cameras.

  • Lumix DMC-ZS60. This fixed lens camera offers a 30X optical zoom lens with 18MP of resolution still images and 4K video resolution.
  • Lumix DMC-ZS100. The ZS-100 is a small camera that has a 10X optical zoom lens and an impressive 1-inch image sensor.
  • Lens. Panasonic has announced an impressive 100-400mm telephoto zoom lens for its line of mirrorless cameras.


Sony's latest action camera, the AS50, provides 11.1 megapixels of resolution along with a live view remote to enable remote shooting. It works in almost 200 feet of water depth with the use of the camera's underwater housing unit.

Sony also introduced an SDXC memory card that can read at 260MB per second and write at 100MB per second.
