Xbox Game Pass is a subscription service that gives you access to hundreds of games, and Microsoft charges you every month whether or not you actually download and play any of them. If you want to stop the recurring charges, you have to make sure to cancel your Xbox Game Pass subscription when you're done with it.

You can sign up for Xbox Game Pass using your Xbox One, but you can't cancel it that way. Cancelling Game Pass is like canceling an Xbox Live subscription, in that you can use your Xbox One to change your payment method, but there is no option on your console to actually end the subscription.

The only way to cancel an Xbox Game Pass subscription is through the Microsoft web page.

When you cancel Xbox Game Pass, you lose access to all of the Game Pass games that you don't actually own. If you cancel and choose to receive a partial refund, you will lose access immediately.

What Happens When You Cancel Xbox Game Pass?

There are two ways to end an Xbox Game Pass subscription, and they each have different consequences.

  • Canceling Xbox Game Pass — If you cancel your subscription, you have the option to receive a partial refund or simply end your subscription when it runs out.
  • Turning off auto-renewal — If you end recurring billing on your subscription, Microsoft will automatically cancel it when your subscription runs out.

Cancelling Xbox Game Pass does not impact any achievements you earned while playing free games, and you will not lose any progress you made while playing the games.

If you decide to subscribe again at a later time, you'll be able to continue where you left off as long as your save data is available on your console or in the cloud. If you decide to purchase a digital or physical copy of a game you started while subscribed to Xbox Game Pass, that will also allow you to continue playing where you left off.

In extremely rare cases, canceling Xbox Game Pass may prevent you from playing physical or digital copies of Game Pass games that you actually own. If this happens, contact Microsoft customer support. You absolutely should not lose access to games you own when you cancel Xbox Game Pass.

How to Cancel Xbox Game Pass

The only way to cancel Xbox Game Pass is to use the Microsoft website. You can do this on a computer, phone, or even your Xbox One.

If you use your Xbox One to cancel your subscription, you still need to use a web browser. There is no way to cancel Xbox Game Pass using the subscriptions and services menu on an Xbox One.

If you don't see the option to manage or cancel your subscription, and you're using a web browser on your phone or Xbox One, try a different browser or switch to a computer.

How to Turn Off Xbox Game Pass Auto-Renewal

The other way to cancel Xbox Game Pass is to turn off auto-renewal. This is similar to the cancellation option that leaves Xbox Game Pass active until the end of your current subscription period. When you use this option, you'll be able to continue playing your Game Pass games until your subscription expires.

This is a good option if you think you might be done with Game Pass before the end of your current subscription period because it prevents the subscription from renewing automatically.

If you get to the end of your subscription period, and you're still playing games from the service, all you have to do is resubscribe.

Here's how to turn off auto-renewal for Xbox Game Pass, so you can keep playing without any surprise charges later on:

  1. Navigate to account.microsoft.com.

  2. Click Services & subscriptions.

  3. Locate Xbox Game Pass in the list, and click Manage.

  4. Click Change.

If you want to continue playing your Xbox Game Pass games, you will need to manually resubscribe after your subscription runs out. This is useful if you think you might take a break from your Game Pass games and want to save some money.

  7. When your subscription period runs out, you will not be charged, and you will lose access to your Xbox Game Pass games.
