How to Cancel Subscriptions on iPhone

Manage your iTunes and App Store subscriptions from your phone

Apple makes it super-easy to subscribe to services and apps using the credit or debit card on file with your Apple ID. When you no longer want those services, cancelling those subscriptions is a little trickier. We'll show you everything you need to know to cancel a subscription on both iPhone and in iTunes.

The instructions in this article apply to iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches running iOS 13, iOS 12 and iOS 11 (older versions are similar, but the steps are not exactly the same). It also applies to computers running iTunes 12 and up.

What Is an iTunes & App Store Subscription?

Calling these subscriptions "iTunes subscriptions" isn't technically correct. After all, that makes it sound you're subscribing to iTunes, which you're not (though subscribing to Apple Music is pretty similar). Instead, it's probably more accurate to call them Apple ID subscriptions or something like that, since they're tied to your Apple ID.

Whatever you call them, these are monthly or annual subscriptions to services and apps that you sign up for on your Apple devices. They can include things like signing up for Netflix or Hulu using their apps, unlocking bonus features of an otherwise-free app, or signing up to use a totally paid app.

Whatever you subscribe to, doing it this way makes things pretty simple: It uses the credit or debit card on file in your Apple ID so Apple just bills you each month or year for your subscription payments.

How to Cancel a Subscription on iPhone

Just like you can subscribe directly on your iPhone, you can cancel subscriptions there, too. To do that, though, you don't necessarily use the app you're trying to cancel. Instead, follow these steps:

  1. Tap the Settings app to open it.

You can also cancel subscriptions through the App Store app. Go to Updates -> your icon -> Manage Subscriptions.

  2. Tap your Apple ID.

You might have to tap View Apple ID in the pop-up. Enter your username and password, or authorize with Touch ID or Face ID, if prompted.

  3. Tap Subscriptions.

  4. This screen lists all of your current subscriptions (in the Active section) and cancelled subscriptions (in Expired).

  5. Tap the subscription that you want to cancel.

  6. This screen lists other options for the subscription (in case you prefer to pay less for a different offering). Choose one of those if you want. Otherwise, tap Cancel Subscription.

  7. In the pop-up window, tap Confirm to cancel the subscription (or Not Now to retain the subscription).

Even after you cancel the subscription, you'll be able to use the service until the end of the current subscription period (usually a month or year). This date is noted at the bottom of the screen, beneath the Cancel button.

You can cancel iTunes subscriptions on your Apple TV, too. To do that, go to Settings -> Accounts -> Management Subscriptions -> select the subscription to cancel -> Cancel Subscription -> Confirm.

Which Subscriptions Can You Cancel with iPhone or iTunes?

You can subscribe to all kinds of services from your iPhone or other iOS/tvOS device, but not everything supports iTunes subscriptions. That's a feature the service you're trying to subscribe to needs to offer. There's no way to create a complete list of services and apps that support iTunes subscriptions (there's just too many), but here's a sense of the types of things you can and can't subscribe to this way.
