How to Cancel HBO, Starz or Showtime on Your iPhone or Pad

Finding It Difficult to Cancel Your Subscription? You Aren't Alone...

You know that street game where someone hides a ball within one of three shells or cups, moving them quickly around the table to make it difficult to figure out which is hiding the ball?  Attempting to cancel subscriptions like HBO Now, Showtime or Starz on your iPhone or iPad may give you a similar feeling.  Apple may want to make your device easy to use, but just like cable companies, they want to make it difficult to cancel subscriptions.

Here's the catch: the option to cancel is not within the app. You need to cancel subscriptions inside your Apple ID settings, and if you don't know how to get to your Apple ID settings, you are not alone. But don't worry. It's easy to find once you know its hiding spot.

How to cancel subscriptions on your iPhone/iPad.

  • First, launch your iPhone or iPad's Settings app. It is the app icon with gears on it.
  • The very top option in settings is your Apple ID account. It should read your name with "Apple ID, iCloud, iTunes & App Store" beneath it.
  • Tap iTunes & App Store.
  • At the top of this screen you will see "Apple ID:" followed by your Apple ID's email address. This doesn't look like a button, but it is. Tap it to bring up the Apple ID menu.
  • On the Apple ID menu, tap View Apple ID. You will be asked to either enter your Apple ID password (this is the same password you use to make purchases) or use Touch ID to enter these settings.
  • Scroll down the Account Settings and tap Subscriptions.
  • All of your active subscriptions are displayed on this page.  This includes Apple Music, magazines, apps and premium cable subscriptions.  Tap the subscription you want to cancel.
  • On the subscription details page, scroll all the way to the bottom and tap Cancel Subscription. Most subscriptions will stay active until the end of the billing cycle.

Do you need a subscription on your iPhone or iPad if you have one through your cable provider?

Premium cable has never been more easy to obtain or more confusing to figure out.  You may have noticed multiple apps for HBO, Showtime and other premium cable channels.  HBO Now and Showtime allow you to watch those respective channels on your iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) by subscribing through your Apple ID.

HBO Go and Showtime Anytime are designed for watching the same content using your cable provider, so if you already subscribe through cable, you don't need to subscribe again. Starz uses the same app for both subscribing as a 'stand alone' package and using your cable provider subscription.

Do you need to put in your cable provider credentials for every app you use?

The iPhone and iPad now have a TV app that can bring all of your cable and broadcast channel apps together in one place.  It will even add in streaming video from Hulu and your iTunes library. And perhaps the best part is the centralized credentials.  You can set your cable credentials in the device's settings by launching the Settings app and scrolling down until you see TV Provider.  Tap TV Provider to sign into your cable provider and allow steaming apps to use those credentials.
