CallerID Ringtones IPhone App Review

Caller ID Ringtones app

This review refers to version 3.1.1 of this app. Later versions may have changed elements reviewed here.

The Good

  • 2,000 names and relationships
  • Easy to use
  • Previews for all ringtones

The Bad

  • None

Purchase at iTunes

Caller ID Ringtones is an excellent ringtone app with a twist. Instead of creating ringtones from your music, this app includes thousands of names and relationships. Create those ringtones and assign them to the right contact and your phone will announce exactly who is calling (assuming you're getting a call from a number in your address book, that is).

Great Ringtone Selection

Caller ID Ringtones includes more than 2,000 ringtones that will announce who is calling you, including both actual their names and their relationship to you. Names are sorted alphabetically, and since you have to select from the built-in list, the variety was important. I was pretty impressed with the selection. The app includes a ton of obscure names, and I was able to find every name I searched for except for Isla (sorry Islas!).

For relationships, Caller ID Ringtones includes everything from "booty call" to "grandmother." You should have no problem finding an appropriate label for everyone in your phonebook. Most ringtones come in several different voice types. I particularly like the butler (maybe because I’m a sucker for British accents), but you can also choose from a hip/hop style, movie announcer, or a basic, work-appropriate voice announcement.

Caller ID Ringtones includes a preview of each ringtone. Once you find one you like, enter your email address to receive the ringtone and download instructions. Like most ringtone apps, you will need to download the ringtone to your computer, transfer it to iTunes, and then sync it back to your iPhone.

(Read our how-to tutorial for more details on this process.)

I received the emails right away and had no trouble transferring the ringtones to iTunes. It would be awesome if you could add new ringtones without connecting your iPhone to a computer, but I have yet to find a ringtone app that has eliminated that process, so we just have to grin and bear it.

A Few Notes Since the Original Review

This review was originally published in May 2011. Since then, a few things have changed that are worth noting:

  • Caller ID Ringtones hasn't been updated since Jan. 2015. It's still available in the App Store and still works, but it may not be something the developer is still supporting
  • There's a free version of the app, but how it differs from the paid one isn't entirely clear to me. It may have to do with advertising. The free version showed me 3 ads before I was even able to start using the app, which is pretty annoying
  • The app now includes an in-app purchase feature. The basic app is limited to the creation of 3 ringtones. To unlock the ability to make unlimited ringtones, you have to buy the in-app purchase
  • The app's reviews at the App Store are pretty bad. The current version gets an average of 1.5 stars, while all versions of the app manage a 3.5-star rating. Buyer beware, I'd say.

    The Bottom Line

I have no complaints with the Caller ID Ringtones app. The app includes a wide selection of names and relationships, and it is very easy to use. In fact, once you download the app, you can start updating your ringtones within minutes. I also like that your ringtones can be playful or more work-appropriate. Overall rating: 5 stars out of 5.

    What You’ll Need

Caller ID Ringtones is compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. It requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later.
