Introduction To The Boston Acoustics TVee Model 20

The Boston Acoustics TVee Model 20 is an attractive, compact, self-contained, easy-to-use system that can complement an LCD, Plasma, or OLED TV creating an intimate, but satisfying, TV listening experience. The system consists of a two-channel sound bar with a wireless subwoofer. To make this system more practical the subwoofer is wireless. The Subwoofer receives audio signals from the main soundbar unit without the need for an unsightly audio cable.

The system is very easy to set up and use.

Getting started with Boston Acoustics TVee Model 20 is easy. All you have to do to get going is unbox the Soundbar and subwoofer, plug in the power to each unit with the provided power adapters, turn the Soundbar and subwoofer on, and connect an audio source to either the provided analog or digital audio inputs on the soundbar.

When you turn both the soundbar and subwoofer on they will automatically link to each other. The total time, less than 15 minutes from box to great sound for your TV.

The TVee Model 20 delivered good audio performance, keeping in mind that it is a 2.1 channel system, and not a typical 5.1 channel surround sound system.

The surround image is minimal as this is a 2.1 channel system with no additional audio processing. Although definitely not immersive as either virtual or Dolby/DTS surround sound, the Soundbar does provide a wide stereo image which is a definite improvement over listening to onboard TV speakers.

Boston Acoustics provided no frequency response or crossover information on the system and only indicates that it has a total peak power rating of 100 watts, but in real world listening of both movie and music sources, the TVee Model 20 easily delivered room filling sound in a 12x15 foot space. The soundbar reproduces the mid and high frequencies well, with good vocal presence, and the extremely compact subwoofer, although not window-shattering, provides more than adequate bass for a good listening experience.

What I Like About The TVee Model 20

  • Straight forward setup, easy link-up between soundbar and subwoofer.
  • Wireless Subwoofer connection reduces cable clutter.
  • Good sound quality from both main Soundbar unit and subwoofer.
  • Can be shelf, table, or wall mounted.
  • If you have a learning remote control, you can use it to control the soundbar.

What I Didn't Like About The TVee Model 20

  • Minimal surround sound image.
  • Only one set of audio inputs.
  • No Digital Optical or Coaxial Audio inputs for TVs that only have digital audio outputs.
  • Wireless sub does not include a wired connection option. The Sub can only be used with this system.
  • No wall mounting hardware provided.

The Bottom Line

This system is not a replacement for a true multi-speaker system in a large room, but it is a great option for a basic no-frills sound system that can enhance your TV viewing enjoyment. You can also use it with any device that has analog stereo outputs, such as a CD, DVD, and Blu-ray Disc players manufactured before 2014. Just keep in mind when using with a DVD or Blu-ray Disc player, that you are only accessing two-channel audio.

The Boston Acoustics TVee Model 20 can also be used as a second sound system for a TV in the bedroom, office, or secondary family room.

Although the TVee Model sounds good and is very convenient system to use, two disappointments are that it only has one set of stereo audio inputs and has no digital optical/coaxial input option. This is important to note as an increasing number of flat panel LCD/Plasma televisions are eliminating analog stereo output connections and going strictly with digital optical/coaxial outputs. If you intend to use the TVee Model 20 as a sound enhancement for your TV, make sure your TV has a set of analog stereo output connections.

Taking all into consideration, if you are looking for a no-frills way to enhance your sound without investing in a multi-speaker 5.1 channel home theater system, the TVee Model 20 is a great value, especially for a suggest price of $299.
