Boston Acoustics is a well known manufacturer of loudspeakers and with the TVee Model 20, it offers a self-contained, easy-to-use system that is designed to complement a flat panel television for an intimate, satisfying, listening experience for those that don't want to spend the money or hassle with the clutter of a multi-speaker home theater system. The TVee Model 20 combines a 2 channel speaker/amplifier, with a wireless subwoofer. The sub receives audio signals from the main unit without an unsightly audio cable. For a close-up look at the features and functions of the Boston Acoustics TVee Model 20, check out the following photo gallery. Also, after viewing this gallery, also check out my Review.

Shown in this photo are all the accessories that come packaged with the Boston Acoustics TVee Model 20.

Here is a triple photo of the main unit sound bar.

At the top of the photo is the soundbar with the speaker grill on, which is the way you would normally see it, the middle photo shows the front of the sound bar with the speaker grill removed, and the bottom photo shows what the sound bar looks like from the rear.

Also, what you can't see is what is actually inside the soundbar casing which is the internal 2-channel amplifier and wireless communication link circuitry.

1. Features of the TVee Model 20 Soundbar unit shown in this photo include:

2. 2 1-1/2" x 6" full range drivers using HHRT (Hyperbolic High Rigidity Transducer) design.

3. Soundbar Frequency Reponse/Crossover: No Information provided.

4. Inputs: One set analog stereo.

5. Built-in wireless link circutry for wirless subwoofer. 2.4 GHz transmission frequency, 25-foot range.

Here is a look at the onboard controls, which are located on the top of the Boston Acoustics TVee Model 20 Soundbar unit.

As you can see, starting on the left is the power on (green)/off (red) indicator light, the power on/standy button (main power switch is on the rear of the soundbar), followed by the mute, and volume down/up buttons.

One thing to point out is that the TVee Model 20 does not come with a remote control, but if you have a universal learning remote you can use that to learn and control the TVee Model 20's functions. Another thing to point out is that the onboard controls are not backlit which means that in a darkened room, these buttons are very difficult to see.

Boston Acoustics TVee Model 20 - Soundbar Connections

Shown on this page are the connections on the rear panel of the Boston Acoustics TVee Model 20 sound bar unit.

Starting on the left side is the Wireless ID switch. This switch provides 4 wireless transmission frequencies for communication with the wireless subwoofer. The wireless ID switch has to be set to the same number on both the soundbar and subwoofer for the communication link to work. If the soundbar and subwoofer are communicating properly upon initial setup, there is no need to change the setting.

Moving to the right of the Wireless ID switch is Trim Level switch. This switch allows the user to change the input sensitivity of the TVee Model 20. In other words, if you find that the audio signal coming from your TV or other source device used is not loud enough, or too loud, you can use the provided settings to get the best input signal. Setting "1" is the most sensitive (loudest), while setting "3" is the least sensitive (softest).

Moving to the center of the photo are a set of analog stereo input connections. The audio inputs can be used for any device that has a stereo analog output connection, such as a TV, VCR, DVD player, or cable box.

If your TV has variable audio outputs and you have them connected to the Soundbar, you can control the volume using your TV's remote control, rather than using the Boston Acoustics TVee Model 20. This may be a more convenient option for controlling the volume.

It is important to note that there is only one set of analog audio connections. If you desire to connect more than one audio source at a time to the TVee Model 20, you will need to use an external A/V switchbox.

Also, another thing to point out is that there are no digital optical or digital coaxial audio input connections on the TVee Model 20, so you need to make sure that your source component (TV, DVD player, Blu-ray Disc Player, Cable/Satellite Box) has a set of analog stereo outputs. This is especially important for those that have newer LCD or Plasma TVs as an increasing number of those sets are eliminating the analog audio output option.

Moving to the right is the connection for plugging in the provided external power supply.

Lastly, on the far right is the main power switch. This switch needs to be in the ON position in order for the front panel on/standby switch to operate.

Boston Acoustics TVee Model 20 - Wireless Sub Controls

To wrap-up this look at the Boston Acoustics TVee Model 20 is a close-up of the rear panel of the wireless subwoofer.

Starting on the left side of the photo is that subwoofer volume (gain) gain control. Set this to your preference in relation to the volume setting on the sound bar unit.

Just to the right of the volume control is that power status indicator light. When the main subwoofer power switch (shown in the center of the photo) is set to on, the indicator light up red, which means it is in standby mode. When the subwoofer detects an incoming audio signal, the light will turn green and you should be able to hear bass coming from the subwoofer if low frequency information is present. You can use the volume control to set the intensity of bass in relation to the soundbar.

Finally, on the right side of the photo is the power receptacle provided for the detachable power cord.

The most obvious thing to point out about the wireless subwoofer is that it has no physical audio input connection alternative. This means that this sub can only be used with the TVee Model 20 system, or other compatible wireless system made by Boston Acoustics.

Final Take

The TVee Model 20 delivers good audio performance, taking into consideration that it is a 2.1 channel system, and not a typical 5.1 channel surround sound system. The surround image is minimal as this is a 2.1 channel system with no additional audio processing. Although definitely not immersive as either virtual or Dolby/DTS surround sound is, the Soundbar does provide a wide stereo image which is a definite improvement over listening to onboard TV speakers.

This system is not a replacement for a true multi-speaker system in a large room, but it is a great option for a basic no-frills sound system that can enhance your TV viewing enjoyment. You can also use it with any device that has analog stereo outputs, such as a CD, DVD, or even Blu-ray Disc player. Just keep in mind when using with a DVD or Blu-ray Disc player, that you are only accessing two-channel audio. The Boston Acoustics TVee Model 20 can also be used as a second sound system for a TV in the bedroom, office, or secondary family room.
