Board Games You Can Play on Facebook

Play with a friend or new person in Messenger or Facebook

Facebook offers more than 100 board games in its Instant Games section that you can play on the Facebook website or in its Messenger app. Chess, Backgammon, Scrabble, Checkers, Reversi, Words With Friends and Tic Tac Toe are all familiar names. Play these Facebook board games with your friends right from Facebook or the Messenger app. Choose which friend you want to play against, make sure they're online, check their stats, and challenge them to a match, or tap the Instant Game button to play with a person you don't know (yet).

Where to Find Board Games

In the Messenger app, tap the Discover icon at the bottom of the Messenger list of contacts. Select a game from the menu, accept the conditions, and choose an opponent who is online or select Instant Play for a new opponent.

In Facebook on the web, select Games from the Explore section of the navigation panel at the left of the Facebook screen. Click any game you want to play or type the name of a game in the search field. After you play a game, it appears in the navigation panel in the Shortcuts section.

Each game lists the type of information it provides to the game developer, so you know of any privacy risk you are taking before you agree.

Privacy Concerns

Apps may be able to access only your public profile, or you may be granting the game access to your Friends list and your email address. Some games message you with announcements and tips. Be sure you know the privileges you are giving to a game developer before agreeing to play.

What We Like

What We Don't Like

  • A single game can last a long time.

  • The graphics are somewhat out of date.

You're bound to remember this game where the objective is to capture the king. When you start Chess, you'll see a chess board on your screen. Drag and drop your men around the board. Then click on Play Move to make your move final. Then, sit back and wait for your opponent to make a move. There's a little chat screen you can use to send each other messages during the match too.

Roll your virtual dice in Backgammon and move your pieces. With some luck and strategy you may be able to win Backgammon against another Facebook player. Select from your Friends list or opt for a multiplayer option. Don't forget to practice first by training your skills with Hermes. Once you complete your training, the game is unlocked for play on your computer or in Messenger on your mobile device.

There are several versions of the classic Checkers game for Facebook and Messenger that pop up when you type "checkers" in the Instant Game search field. Choose an opponent and start sliding your pieces across the board and jumping over your opponent's pieces. Don't forget to announce "king me."

  • Privacy policy is in a non-English language.

Instant Games also has several versions of Reversi. Invite your friends to play or play Reversi with anyone anywhere in the world. Some games include little green dots on the board where you can place your pieces and a message board so you can chat while you play. Make as many of the pieces as you can your color, and you win. This is a high strategy game so put on your thinking cap.

  • Familiar childhood game.

  • Lots of versions to pick from.

What We Don't Like

  • Some of the apps add "extras" to the simple game.

  • A quick game can drag out if your opponent isn't paying attention.

Facebook includes several versions of this classic X's and O's game. Play Tic Tac Toe on your profile or your friend's profile. Once you add the Tic Tac Toe application, make the first move. Then come back later to see if one of your friends made another move. Play Tic Tac Toe with other people in the public section.

  • Millions of people play this game worldwide, so it's likely some of your friends are already playing.

  • You can look up word definitions in the game board.

What We Don't Like

  • No time limit for a play.

  • Tile placement isn't as critical as in Scrabble.

  • Player not punished for playing words they aren't sure of.
