The Best Windows 10 Features for Laptop and Tablet PC Users

Why You Should Upgrade Your Laptop or 2-in-1 to Windows 10

Windows 10 greatly improves on the Windows 8 experience, with features that should appeal to laptop users and those with tablet PCs. Here are a few of those features that could convince you to upgrade now.

1
Windows Store Apps Work on the Desktop

Windows Store apps, previously called Metro apps, are no longer relegated to a different, tablet-centric user interface. You can now run those touch-friendly apps in all modes, desktop or tablet, side by side with your other programs. In other words, Windows 10 gets rid of the previous awkwardness of Windows Store apps to make them more attractive to more users by letting you run them in any screen mode.

2
Run Mobile Apps in Windows 10

Additionally, Windows 10 can run "universal apps,"apps that work on mobile devices, including Windows Phone and Android and iOS. Though it depends on developers taking advantage of this feature to port their apps to the universal apps platform, it could mean less disconnect between mobile and desktop. Run your favorite mobile apps in Windows.

3
Talk to Your Computer

Microsoft is including its digital assistant, Cortana, in Windows 10. So just as you might set reminders, do a quick search, or get the weather forecast with your voice on Windows Phone with Cortana (or with Siri on iPhone or Google Now on Android), you can get that voice-controlled assistance from your computer.

4
Draw on Web Sites

If you have a touchscreen PC (or better yet, a stylus-enabled Windows laptop or tablet PC), Windows' new built-in browser, Microsoft Edge, will take advantage of your computer's feature so working with web pages will be even better. In addition to distraction-free views and reading list features, you can draw or write directly on web pages and share those markups with others.

5
Switch to Tablet View

Windows 10 Continuum is a new feature that basically can automatically switch from desktop to tablet view if you have a 2-in-1 PC, such as the Microsoft Surface. When you disconnect the tablet screen from the keyboard, Windows will ask you if you want to switch to tablet view, which provides a touch-optimized interface, with larger menus and taskbars and that Start menu screen people love to hate. Still tablet mode is better for tapping, and you can also manually switch to tablet mode from Windows 10's new Action Center icon in the taskbar. This was one of the major features announced at Microsoft's 2015 Build Conference, as the company highlighted Windows 10's integration and smooth switching between desktop and tablet mode.

6
Get More Usable Workspace

Windows 10 Task View
Microsoft

One of the toughest things about working on a laptop or tablet PC is dealing with the (usually small), limited screen real estate. Most of us have multiple program windows open throughout the day, and switching between them can be not only cumbersome but also time consuming. So Windows 10 incorporates virtual desktops. These let you organize apps into different desktop views (e.g., apps for project work in one desktop, apps for social media in another, and apps for personal projects in yet another virtual desktop). To use these additional workspaces and move apps between virtual desktops, select task view from the taskbar and drag the app into the desktop you want it to be shown in. Although virtual desktops aren't new (and OS X has it as well), this is a nice productivity feature. Task view also helps you see all your open apps at once.
