Movavi Video Converter: A Quick Video Merger and Converter (Windows and macOS)

screenshot of clips in Movavi Video Converter ready to be combined

 Created by Alexander Fox

A subset of the Movavi Video Suite, Movavi Video Converter is built for converting videos from one format to another. It can handle multiple kinds of container files and codecs on the input side, and exports video in the most popular codecs.

Basic options allow for adjusting quality slightly. A broad palette of editing tools like stabilization, effects, trim, crop, and rotate can modify clips in simple ways before the videos are combined. A seven-day free trial is provided at download, and a paid license can be obtained for use beyond one week. All videos processed with the free version will be watermarked.

What We Like:

  • Excellent balance between options and simplicity.
  • Editing tools are effective and useful.

What We Don't Like:

  • The paid version is expensive.
  • Prominent watermark makes trial version less useful.

MPEG Streamclip: Supports Many Formats, but Complex (Windows and macOS)

screenshot of mpeg streamclip export interface

 Created by Alexander Fox

MPEG Streamclip in free, open-source software intended to convert single videos. It can also be used to merge files, but it's not obvious.

Go to File > Open Files, then select more than one file. This will automatically concatenate the video files together in alphabetical order. However, there's no way to rearrange the clips once they're opened, and no way to adjust the order in which they appear.

As a result, MPEG Streamclip's video merging tools are extremely rudimentary, at best. To organize video files, it's best to rename the files with numbers before opening. Input and output options are broad, with detailed settings.

What We Like:

  • High-quality conversion engine with many file formats.
  • Open-source and free.

What We Don't Like:

  • Video merging is rudimentary at best.
  • Clips cannot be moved or reorganized.

Filmora Video Editor - A Powerful Video Editor and Merger (Windows and macOS)

Screenshot of Filmora Instant Cutter video merging interface

Created by Alexander Fox

Filmora Video Editor distinguishes itself with an exceptionally well-designed interface and multiple platform support. It's a full-blown video editor, so it's not as simple to use as the more basic options on our list. With the greater complexity, however, comes greater power, including transitions, audio tracks, titles, effects, trimming, and an array of other changes that editing empowers you to make. In the full-featured mode, videos can be downloaded from the web or recorded on your screen.

If you're not looking to take on the challenge, Filmora's "Instant Cutter" simplifies the merging process. Simply select your videos and export. Instant Cutter is free to use, but you'll need the paid premium version to remove the watermark on exported videos.

What We Like:

  • Free Instant Cutter makes combining videos a snap.
  • Well-designed interfaces simplify a complex process.
  • Great variety of stock audio and transitions in the full editor.

What We Don't Like:

  • Watermarked free videos without a paid upgrade.

iMovie: An Excellent Free Option for Apple Customers (macOS and iOS)

screenshot of iMovie editing timeline running on macOS.

 Created by Alexander Fox

iMovie is likely the easiest non-linear video editing tool on the market. If you own a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, iMovie is free for you to download from the App Store. It's dead simple to use, and if you're lost, you can look up multiple tutorial videos available online.

You'll find the complete palette of video editing tools as well. You can trim clips in place, add music, smooth cuts with transitions, drop in titles, and more. The iOS version by necessity doesn't include all the same tools as the macOS version, but it retains the straightforward interface. Export options aren't as broad or customizable as they could be on either iOS or macOS, but processing is fast and reliable.

What We Like:

  • Capable and flexible interface.
  • Huge collection of editing tools and effects.

What We Don't Like:

• Limited export and sharing options.
  • Only available on Apple devices.

HD Video Converter Factory: Balanced Complexity and Power (Windows)

screenshot of HD Video Converter Factory merge interface

Created by Alexander Fox

HD Video Converter Factory is free to download and videos can be merged and saved without upgrading to its paid version. The selection of output options is more constrained than other apps on this list, but it hits all the highlights, like MOV and MP4 container formats and H.264 and H.265 codecs, as well as some mobile device edge cases.

Videos can be imported from your local storage or downloaded from YouTube within the application. Clips can be trimmed or cropped before converting. The user interface is a little dated and export isn't fast, but the software is free and capable enough for the price.

What We Like:

  • Covers all the basics without undue complications.
  • Simple editing tools are included.

What We Don't Like:

  • Sluggish conversion speed.
  • Batch processing unavailable in the free version.

Filmora Go: A High Quality Mobile Merger (iOS and Android)

Screenshot of Filmora Go file picker on iOS

 Created by Alexander Fox

Built by the same company as the Filmora desktop app, the mobile version shares many of that app's best features.

Add videos through the app's customized file picker based on their thumbnails, then trim the clips on import, or use the in-timeline trimming tools. You'll also find music, transitions, crop, titles, speed, filters, and more. When you're finished, share videos using the custom export dialog or the system share sheet.

What We Like:

  • Impressively zippy, smooth interface.
  • An unparalleled selection of mobile editing tools.

What We Don't Like:

  • Circle-based file picker makes it hard to see clips.
  • Videos can only be added or removed in the first step.

Screenshots of InShot video editor on iOS

 Created by Alexander Fox

InShot stands out by handling mixed video aspect ratios very elegantly. If you merge vertical and horizontal video together, InShot will export a square-shaped video file with attractive, blurred footage in place of the standard black bars.

Alongside the standard titles and transitions, InShot includes Snapchat-style stickers that can be applied to the timeline, but they're locked behind the app's Pro version. On the free version, you'll see a short video advertisement after exporting, and the video will be watermarked. In addition to video editing tools, InShot also includes robust photo editing capabilities.

What We Like:

  • Unique features like stickers and aspect ratio merging.
  • Music from Apple Music can be added to videos.
  • Expertly constructed interface that avoids cluttering your screen.

What We Don't Like:

  • Apart from effects, export options are limited.
  • A recurring subscription model for Pro features.
