The 6 Best NFL Memes

Fans create the best football memes

The National Football League (NFL) has been entertaining the public since 1899, providing at times the best, and at times the worst sports action American football had to offer.

Every season we look forward to our favorite teams competing for the top spot in their respective division and working their way through the playoffs to play in the biggest game of them all, the Superbowl.

Over the years an entirely new competition has developed, not between the teams, or for that matter between the players, but instead between the fans creating NFL memes either immortalizing amazing feats, or a bit more likely making fun of other teams mistakes.

What do NFL Memes Mean?

NFL memes are a chance to look back at the events from the last games, the last season, or even further into the NFL past and highlight the things that made us laugh, made us gawk, or made us wonder just what the heck was going on.

NFL memes can be about an individual player, referee, team, team owners, the league, and even sometimes, about the fans. But no matter who or what is the focus of an NFL meme, you can be sure it going to make you laugh or bring back memories of special events.

How are NFL Memes Used?

For the most part, NFL memes are used to express sarcasm about another team or player. The meme can be about specific plays in the game that went horribly wrong, about the results of a game or season. They can represent support for a fan's team, or as an insult to a much-disliked competing team or player.

If nothing else, those people creating NFL memes are creative, and some may say have too much time on their hands.

Examples of NFL Memes:

Example #1:

Image: Stole the wrong Playbook.

Text: Look, lady, I stole the wrong playbook. You got to help us out here.

Meaning: This meme covers a number of xxx involving the New England Patriots as well as making reference to the first woman referee in an NFL. It has long been suspected that Patriots coach Bill Belichick (featured in the meme) has used illicit means to gain an advantage on the teams he is playing against. This meme all covers the supposition that for some unknown reason, the NFL referrers are on the side of the Patriots, making calls in their favor quite often.

Example #2:

Image: Drew Carey: Whose Line is it Anyway.

Text: Welcome to the NFL, Where the rules are made up and the points don’t matter.

Meaning: There are a number of variants to this popular meme featuring Drew Carey from the Whose Line is it Anyway TV show. Other texts include Welcome to the NFL where the rules are made up and nobody knows what a catch is.

In both cases the meme trades on the NFL's complicated rules, and how it seems that they are unevenly applied from week-to-week.

Example #3:

Image: Referees discussing penalty.

Text: After further review, the runner did not touch second base. Touchdown Celtics.

Meaning: The NFL referees have gone on strike a few times; the latest walkout was at the beginning of the 2015 season. The NFL countered by bringing in replacement referees to officiate the games that were not up on all the rules, or for that matter who the teams were.
