Best Intel Pentium 4 Motherboards

We know there's not a lot of call to build a PC with an obsolete Pentium processor in it anymore. There's are plenty of much faster processors out there now. However, some people may need to repair or replace an old motherboard in a vital machine, so for those people and for a historical reference, here's a rundown of the best motherboards designed around the Intel Pentium 4 processor.

One of the primary features of the i875 over the i865 chipsets is PAT to increase memory performance, but ASUS was one of the first to mimic this feature in the i865PE chipset with their Hyper Path enabled BIOS. It also features many of the key features of the chipset including native Serial ATA Raid 0, 8 USB 2.0 ports, Dual DDR400 support and Hyper-Threading. Also included is IDE RAID support.

Following ASUS, ABIT also released a modified BIOS that enabled a PAT-like feature they call Game Accelerator. This increases memory performance considerably making it a better choice than an i875P board. Features of the board include support for Hyper-Threading, 800 MHz bus CPUs, Dual DDR 400 memory, native Serial ATA, 8 USB 2.0 ports, IEEE1394a, and AGP 8x. An excellent all around board.

MSI's board has a unique feature compared to the other i865PE based motherboards on the market, dynamic overclocking. The BIOS will adjust the core clock to a higher speed during high CPU utilization. It has the standard i865PE features such as Hyper-Threading, 800 MHz bus, Dual DDR400, native SATA Raid, 8 USB 2.0 ports and 8x AGP. It also uses the Intel CSA Gigabit Ethernet interface.

ASUS P4C800 Deluxe

The main advantage of the i875 chipset until recently was the PAT memory enhancement, but with that gone there is less reason to go for a workstation class motherboard. If you absolutely need one that has the best performance, the ASUS P4C800 is the choice. It features Hyper-Threading, 800 MHz bus, Dual DDR400, ECC support, Promise SATA and IDE RAID controller, 3Com Gigabit Ethernet, and AGP 8X.

Intel D865PERL

If stability is the primary focus for your computer system, then the obvious choice is the Intel D865PERL motherboard. It has the standard i865PE configuration that is the basis for all OEM motherboards on the market but lacks many of the performance enhancements for stability. Don't expect to overclock this board at all, but it the most stable and reliable Pentium 4 motherboard on the market.
