Our Top Picks

Google Wi-Fi

For those who live in a large home and have trouble getting Wi-Fi everything, the Google Wi-Fi set is our favorite solution. The set contains three satellites, which Google call “Wi-Fi points,” each of which covers 1,500 square feet, for a grand total of 4,500 square feet of blanketed coverage. The points are shaped like thick hockey pucks and sit beautifully in plain view. Unfortunately, they lack USB ports, which mean you can’t connect peripherals.

Each point houses a quad-core Arm CPU, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of eMMC flash memory, plus AC1200 (2X2) 802.11ac and 802.11s (mesh) circuitry and a Bluetooth radio. Google combines its 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands into a single band, which means you can’t designate a device to a single band, but on the upside, it uses beamforming technology, which automatically routes devices to the strongest signal. The accompanying app (for Android or iOS) is intuitive and lets you manage the status of your points, as well as set up guest networks, test speeds, port forwarding and more.

Nintendo Switch

4.2

Last year, Nintendo released their much-anticipated convertible game system, the Switch. While it didn’t come out in 2018, the market for this device is still pretty extensive and it would make a great, relevant gift for 2018 all the same. What you get is the system itself: a 720p tablet-style console with two controller attachments you can bring with you to play on the go. When you’re ready to play at home, just slide the system into the Switch dock and pull the controller attachments off and you can play the system in up to 1080p on your computer, just like a normal console. The resolution isn’t going to compete with the pro versions of Xbox or PS4, but the versatility, the amazing first-party games ("Super Mario Odyssey" and "Zelda: Breath of the Wild," to name a couple), and the amazing technology Nintendo has pioneered make this an amazing gift for gamers and electronics lovers alike. What’s more, because it’s a portable system, there’s no shortage of accessories to pick up, so you’ll be able to buy add-on gifts for holidays to come. It’s an amazing little device that — though it’s on the pricey end of the gift range — will make for a very happy recipient.

We’re willing to bet there’s someone in your life who has “cut the cord” and stopped relying on cable for movies and TV shows. Heck, we’ll bet you know at least two! If that’s the case and you are looking for a gift for one of those people, then look no further than the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K. This is the newest and most powerful streaming stick from Amazon. With this device, you can just plug it into the HDMI outlet of a stunning 4K TV and then you are able to stream TV, movies, news, and sports from all the major services including Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, ESPN, Hulu, HBO Now, Showtime, and CBS All Access. Since this is a 4K-compatible device, you can watch 4K movies and TV shows that have been developed with super high-resolution picture quality. To access them, just use the included smart remote to ask Amazon Alexa to “find 4K movies.” Your cord-cutting friend or family member is going to be so impressed.

Maybe you think unwrapping a new toothbrush isn’t as exciting as unboxing a new iPad, but that’s probably only because you haven’t yet met the Oral-B Pro 7000. Equipped with Bluetooth technology, the brush connects to your smartphone to give you real-time feedback on your brushing habits, such as time spent brushing in each quadrant of your mouth. Its CrossAction design surrounds each tooth with bristles angled at 16 degrees and 3D cleaning action rotates and pulsates to break up and remove up to 100 percent more plaque than a regular toothbrush. It has six different modes, including Whitening Mode, Gum Care Mode and Deep Clean Mode, and it even has a pressure sensor that lights up if you are brushing too hard.

HP Sprocket 2nd Edition

3.7

Maybe you’re snap happy when it comes to photography, but those memories don’t always serve you so well sitting on your smartphone. The HP Sprocket Portable Photo Printer lets you connect your social media accounts to the free Sprocket app and physically print them out in no time using Bluetooth. The app also lets you add things like text, borders and emojis and more for a custom touch. The printer is a perfectly portable 4.63 x 3.15 x 0.98 inches and it prints out two-by-three-inch photos on sticky-backed paper.

Gear Aid FLUX Rechargeable Light and Portable Power Station

Got a camper on your list? The Gear Aid FLUX provides power for days. With a battery capacity of 20,800 mAh, it can recharge your Android smartphone up to eight times, your GoPro up to 14 times or your Apple Watch up to 65 times. Its 82 LEDs yield up to 640 lumens of light power, and with three color settings and 10 brightness levels, you can customize the light to your liking. Rated at IP65 durability, it can brave rain, sleet, snow and sand and even send SOS signals if needed. Its built-in Li-ion battery will last anywhere from 13 to 192 hours, depending on how you use it, but fair warning, it’ll take about 12 hours to juice back up via micro-USB when connected to a 2.0-amp charger. At the end of the day, you’ll be blown away by the quality of this power station.

iClever Wireless Folding Keyboard

Add functionality to your tablet or smartphone with this lightweight yet sturdy tri-folding keyboard. It’s compatible with Android, iOS (not Mac) and most Windows devices, and can switch seamlessly between Bluetooth or wired connectivity with an included micro USB cable. You can choose from red, blue or green backlighting, at two different brightness levels, which makes it easy to see the keys, even in dim lighting. It measures a spacious 11.4 x 4.6 x 0.3 inches (HWD) when open and just 6.5 x 4.7 x 0.6 inches when folded, but unfortunately it has no locking mechanism. There’s also no physical power button; just unfold the keyboard and start typing.

Fitbit Alta Fitness Tracker

It seems like everyone is wearing a fitness tracker today, but with so many options out there, which one should you choose? We love the Fitbit Alta largely because of its sleek design. Like most trackers on the market, this one tracks steps taken, distance traveled, floors climbed, calories burned, time spent active and sleep patterns, and will send you reminders if you aren’t moving enough. It syncs wirelessly with your smartphone or computer so you can log meals, record workouts and view trends. It’ll stay charged for up to five days, depending on use, but charges up in one to two hours. While it’s a bit pricier than the Fitbit Flex, in our opinion, it’s well worth the splurge thanks to its ability to track sleep, send calendar alerts and track heart rate.

How We Tested

We bought five top-rated electronic gifts that our reviewers tested for over 100 hours. We asked our testers to consider the most important features when using these electronics, from their entertainment value to their compatibility. We’ve outlined the key takeaways here so that you, too, know what to look for when shopping.

What to Look for in an Electronic Gift

Fitness - If you’re looking for an electronic gift for someone who’s trying to get — or stay — in shape, fitness trackers are a great place to start. Fitbit has some of the best products on the market, but you can even find smartwatches that include fitness tracking features like heart rate monitoring.

Photography - Some of the best electronic gifts for the photography buff in your life are digital cameras and action cameras. If they already have those, check out digital cameras that have built-in printers and pocket-sized printers that work with any camera.

Entertainment - Most of the best electronic gifts out there are designed to provide some kind of entertainment, so it’s easy to find one based on specific interests. Check out streaming devices like Fire TV for someone who likes television and movies, a video game console like the Switch for someone who plays a lot of video games, or a wireless speaker if you’re buying for someone who loves listening to music.

Our reviewers also loved the high-quality display, easy-to-navigate menu, and the fact that it can be connected to your overall smart home setup. “It's also great to be able to ask Alexa to play a video or show and it will grab items from all of your streaming areas,” explained one of our testers. Our reviewers didn’t find a lot of drawbacks with this product, however, one of our testers mentioned that “it would be great if you didn't need to plug in the Fire Stick” because the cord is short and adding an extension cord gets messy.

While a printer of this size isn’t going to produce framable masterpieces, one of our testers explained that “for a quick fun picture to save or have as a party favor, it does the trick.” The printer’s compact, lightweight design makes it easy to bring anywhere, according to our reviewers, and the quality of the photos is good for the size. “[The] colors are vivid and [it] does a good job replicating the true images,” noted one of our testers. On the other hand, one of our reviewers wanted the ability to load more paper and also mentioned that replacement paper gets expensive. And while one of our testers liked the simplicity and ease of use, he also wished the app had a few more features.
