Best Overall: Spigen Liquid Crystal Clear Case

What We Like

  • Slim and clear case from popular accessories brand

  • Bumper design protects sides of watch without interference

What We Don't Like

  • Only covers watch edge, not the full screen

A lightweight, form-fitting case, the Spigen Liquid Crystal Clear tightly wraps around your Apple Watch, ensuring it stays safe from damage. Raised edges protect the watch’s sides and the case’s flexible and shock-absorbent material lasts well over time.

While it’s a great product from the well-known Spigen brand, the case doesn’t cover the entire watch face, although it can be used in conjunction with a screen protector. If you prefer to keep the watch screen uncovered, this case is a great option. It doesn’t take away from the look of the watch and also doesn’t add much bulk, but you may need to remove your watch strap to pop the case on and off.

All cases reviewed here are available in both the 40mm and 44mm versions of the Apple Watch Series 4 & 5.

Runner-up, Best Overall: SUPCASE TPU Clear Case

What We Like

  • Scratch-resistant CPU plastic wraps snugly around your screen, keeping it safe

  • Inexpensive option that includes two cases in the pack

What We Don't Like

  • Snug fit makes it hard to remove

SUPCASE’s TPU Clear Case is made from shock absorbent and scratch resistant soft TPU plastic and fits snugly over your watch screen. It doesn’t interfere with the usability of the watch’s functions and it’s a very budget-friendly option, especially as two cases are included in the pack.

You may have to take off part of your watch’s band to get the case on and off, but as long as you don’t plan on taking it on and off often, it’s only a small issue. While some users report condensation can develop between the case and the watch, especially in humid conditions, it’s an overall great choice that will keep your Apple Watch looking brand new.

If you’re having connection problems between your phone and watch, here are six ways to fix it when your Apple Watch won’t pair.

Best for Divers: Catalyst Waterproof Case

What We Like

  • Durable and tough case extends water resistance to 100 meters

  • Drop-resistance covers falls from up to 6.6 feet

What We Don't Like

  • Expensive

  • Adds bulk to an otherwise slim watch

While both the Apple Watch Series 4 & 5 are water-resistant up to 50 meters and are designed with swimming in mind, sometimes that’s not enough. Divers will love the Catalyst Waterproof Case, which guarantees water resistance for up to 100 meters, or 330 feet. It’s a tough and rugged case made from polycarbonate and silicone.

Your watch is protected in and out of the water, as the Catalyst is drop resistant to falls up to 6.6 feet.

If you don’t plan on diving with the watch, then the main feature of this otherwise expensive case may not be much use. Your watch’s ECG and EKG monitors won’t work from within the case, but the Bluetooth, speakers, heart rate tracker, and other features are all still functional.

Best Bumper Case: X-Doria Defense Edge Case

What We Like

  • Aluminum and rubber bumper safeguards delicate edges

  • Compatible with screen protector of your choice

What We Don't Like

  • Doesn’t have built-in screen protector

  • Buttons are stiff until broken in

A rubber and aluminum bumper case, the Defense Edge from X-Doria is perfect for protecting the edges of your watch, which is subject to dings and scratches from bumping into things. The aluminum is coated with a supple, soft rubber, ensuring the metal doesn’t touch any part of the watch directly. While it doesn’t cover the screen, pair it with a screen protector for comprehensive coverage of the watch’s delicate machinery.

We’d love a few more color options other than black, and the case can be stiff until broken in, especially over the power buttons. Overall though, it’s one of the best bumper cases for the Apple Watch Series 4 & 5.

Best Metal: jwacct Apple Watch Band Case

What We Like

  • Stylish metal watchband with built-in shell case

  • Available in a range of colors

  • Easy to take on and off

What We Don't Like

  • Screen protector is not built-in

This stylish band and shell combo from jwacct is available in a range of metallic colors, such as silver and rose gold, which adds a traditional look to your watch. The built-in shell case makes it easy to snap on and off, and it protects the sides and edges of the watch, although a screen protector isn’t included.

The adjustable magnet clasp works well to keep the watch secured to your wrist and it effectively guards the edge of the Apple Watch against scrapes or drops. We love that this case is offered at a budget price, yet it doesn’t look cheap. Although the case is unisex, it may look too wide or large on smaller wrists.

Best Band and Case Combo: SUPCASE UB Pro

What We Like

  • Case and band combo provides durable, lightweight protection

  • Range of color options makes it easy to change bands

What We Don't Like

  • No screen protection

  • May be too large for small wrists

The UB Pro, from SUPCASE, is a combination case and wristband that protects your watch without impacting its use. We like the color options, but the rugged and bulky design of the case may not suit those who prefer more of a subdued look or those with small wrists.

Installation and removal are quick and simple, and the lightweight case is shock resistant and does a great job of protecting the entire watch.

We’d like to see a screen protector included, but this can easily be added on.

Best Budget: Modal Bumper for Apple Watch

Modal Bumper for Apple Watch

 Courtesy of Walmart

What We Like

  • Minimalist, simple bumper case

  • Available in both Rose Gold and Clear finishes

  • Great product at a low price

What We Don't Like

  • Rose Gold finish occasionally shows scratches

  • Doesn’t cover the screen

The Modal Bumper, available in rose gold or clear TPU, is an affordable option for your Apple Watch, protecting it against scratches. It’s a simple and effective case that will appeal to those who want to keep their watch as the center of attention, but without adding additional bulk or design.

While this case doesn’t provide complete coverage, as the screen is still exposed, it can be used in conjunction with a screen protector. The rose gold finish tends to show scratches more easily than the clear case, but this may not bother you.

If you’re looking for a wallet-friendly, minimalist bumper case for your new Apple Watch, the Modal is a great choice.

Best Protection: Spigen Rugged Armor Pro Case

What We Like

  • Easy to apply and remove.

  • Can be used in conjunction with a screen protector.

  • Guards your Apple watch in a shock-absorbent rubber case.

  • Several colors available.

What We Don't Like

  • The case adds some bulk to the watch face, making it challenging to use along with sport watch bands.

The Rugged Armor Pro Case provides reliable protection for your watch face, in a soft rubber case from the Spigen brand. We like the matte finish, which comes in several colors, and the case is easy to apply and remove.

Raised edges provide additional protection for the sides and corners of the watch face and its shock-absorbent material works well in protecting from scrapes or drops.

As the name implies, the case provides a more rugged look, and it adds bulk to the watch, hindering its ability to work alongside some of the thicker sport watch bands. However, it's a great choice for those who want extra protection and tend to wear their watch in environments where it might be easily scratched or damaged.
