The battery life in Apple's iPhones is improving every year, and these days it's very unlikely you won't be able to get through a full day of typical use, but of course that doesn't mean you still can't use one of the best iPhone battery cases to provide that extra bit of power for those times when you really do need it.

For example, even the best iPhones aren't going to let you stream videos from Netflix or play high-performance games for hours on end without demanding extra juice, and this is where a battery case can really come in handy to get you through the day. Or maybe you're taking a weekend getaway and planning to take a lot of photos and videos, and you don't want to worry about having to stay near a charger.

In any of these cases, the best iPhone battery cases can help you keep your iPhone powered up and running through even the most demanding photo, video, and gaming sessions, and thanks to advances in battery technology many of these can easily double the power available to your iPhone and still offer pretty good protection while still adding surprisingly little extra bulk.

Many of the best iPhone battery cases even go a step further, adding support for Qi wireless charging so that you can still drop your iPhone on one of the best wireless chargers and quickly get a bit of extra juice when you're on the go without needing to fuss with cables, and included Lightning ports even let you connect to your CarPlay system or use a set of wired EarPods without needing to remove the case.

Best for iPhone 12 / 12 Pro: ZeroLemon iPhone 12 & 12 Pro Battery Case 5000mAh

What We Like
  • Qi compatible wireless charging

  • Offers good protection

  • Compatible with CarPlay and Apple Pay

What We Don't Like
  • Bulky

  • Poor camera coverage

While Apple's newest iPhone models offer great battery life under normal circumstances, if you plan to use your new iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro on the fastest 5G networks you will want to add a battery case, as tests have shown that persistent 5G usage can actually shorten the battery life by up to two hours.

Fortunately, ZeroLemon already has you covered with its 5000mAh battery case that will effectively double the battery life of your iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro, guaranteeing that you'll have enough power to get through the day no matter how much time you're spending surfing and streaming over 5G or playing the latest high-performance games, while keeping your shiny new iPhone protected from drops and bumps thanks to its raised shock-absorbent AirCushion corners.

As an added bonus, ZeroLemon's case is Qi compatible, so you'll be able to drop it on your wireless charging pad to juice up both the iPhone and the battery case at the same time—the iPhone gets charged up first, so it will be ready to go if you need to shed the case, after which the battery will be charged, but you should be able to get fully topped up from most wireless chargers simply by leaving them charging overnight. It's also fully compatible with Lightning accessories, so you can use it to sync your iPhone or connect to your CarPlay system without needing to remove the case, and it won't block Apple Pay either.

Best for iPhone 12 mini: Alpatronix iPhone 12 mini Battery Case with Wireless Charging and Lightning Input

What We Like
  • Slim and lightweight

  • Wireless charging support

  • Includes screen protector

What We Don't Like
  • Charging cables not included

The iPhone 12 mini is the smallest iPhone that Apple has made in at least four years, and the first time in even longer that a mainstream iPhone model has been so small. Not surprisingly, however, this compact size means that it also comes with a smaller battery, so you'll want to add Alpatronix's BX12mini case if you want to make sure you can get through the day.

This is even more important when you consider that Apple hasn't skimped on the features in its smaller 5.4-inch iPhone, which packs in the same power-hungry 5G technology and advanced A14 CPU as it's larger sibling, but fortunately Alpatronix's 4000mAh case will effectively double your battery life to keep you surfing and streaming without interruption.

Since you bought Apple's smallest iPhone for a reason, the BX12mini features a slim and lightweight design to add as little bulk as a battery case can, and it's also compatible with wireless chargers, so you can simply top your iPhone 12 mini up overnight right in the battery case, although it still supports a wired connection too for even faster charging. A set of LEDs will let you know at a glance how much power is left, and it even includes a tempered glass screen protector to keep your iPhone screen scratch-free.

Best for iPhone 11: Apple iPhone 11 Smart Battery Case

What We Like
  • Slim and lightweight

  • Dedicated Camera Button

  • Integrated Charging Status

What We Don't Like
  • Lower capacity than other options

  • Limited protection

Although Apple's iPhone 11 Smart Battery Case isn't the highest capacity one we've seen—it only provides about 50 percent more battery life—that's not a huge problem on the iPhone model that already offers the best battery life, and more importantly it also has a few tricks up its sleeve that more than make up for it.

For one thing, you get a dedicated camera button on the case that will allow you to quickly launch the camera app and take a shot, even straight from the lock screen, so you'll never miss that important moment while you fumble to get your iPhone into camera mode. Similarly tight integration with the iPhone also means that Apple's Smart Battery Case is the only one that will show you its charging status right on your iPhone display, and it also makes sure the iPhone knows it's drawing power from an external battery rather than an AC power outlet, so the iPhone will continue to run in a more power-efficient mode than it would with other battery cases.

To top it all off, Apple's iPhone 11 Smart Battery Case supports both Qi wireless and wired Lightning charging, including Fast Charging, and of course it's fully compatible with all of Apple's Lightning accessories, from your EarPods to CarPlay.

Best for iPhone 11 Pro: Mophie Juice Pack Access for iPhone 11 Pro

What We Like
  • Slim design

  • Full port access

  • Fast USB-C charging

What We Don't Like
  • Less efficient wireless charging

One of the most venerable Apple accessory brands, Mophie has been producing its classic Juice Pack cases since the earlier iPhone models, and its Juice Pack Access lineup bring a new ultra-slim design to the iPhone 11 Pro, giving you an extra 5–15 hours of battery life for watching videos, listening to audio, or playing games.

Mophie's Juice Pack Access is unique among battery cases in that it uses Qi wireless charging to power up your iPhone, rather than connecting to the Lightning port. This means that you don't have to worry about accessory compatibility at all, as the bottom port is left entirely exposed for full access. This means you can plug in your EarPods, connect to your CarPlay system, or even charge up your iPhone 11 Pro directly just by plugging it in like you normally would.

The Juice Pack Access case itself charges over USB-C rather than Lightning, but Mophie has been good enough to include the cable in the box, and you can also simply drop it on any wireless charging pad instead to top up both your iPhone and the case. Despite the slim design, it also offers solid protection, with internal rubber support pads for shock absorption, as well as raised edges that protect the screen against drops and bumps.

Best for iPhone 11 Pro Max: Pelican Protector for iPhone 11 Pro Max with EMS Rechargeable Battery Pack

What We Like
  • Military standard drop protection

  • Modular case design

  • Lifetime warranty

What We Don't Like
  • Limited battery capacity

  • Slower wireless charging

Pelican is best known for its ultra-rugged cases for transporting expensive equipment like high-end cameras, and it brings that same expertise to your iPhone 11 Pro Max with its Pelican Protector series, a modular case system that also includes a removable battery so you can stay powered up during all of your outdoor adventures.

The case itself, which is certified to military standard protection for drops of up to 10 feet, incorporates a magnetic plate that allows you to attach the Easy Mount System (EMS) battery pack to give you a boost of up to 50 percent more power, but the best part is that unlike most battery cases, which will add considerable bulk to your already large iPhone 11 Pro Max, you can detach the EMS pack and put it away when you're done, leaving you with just the ultra-protective case.

As an added bonus, the battery pack itself is Qi compatible, which means it can be used to charge any other device as well, and it features an additional USB port so you can even use it to power up other wired devices. The case is also backed up by Pelican's standard lifetime warranty, although of course this only applies to the case itself, and not the iPhone that's inside.

Best for iPhone XR: Lonlif 5000mAh Battery Case for iPhone XR

What We Like
  • Slim design

  • Very affordable

  • Good capacity

What We Don't Like
  • No wireless charging support

  • Doesn't work with CarPlay

Apple's iPhone XR already boasts great battery life, but if you want to make absolutely sure you can get through a weekend trip you'll want to add Lonlif's 5000mAh battery case, which will add an extra 30 hours of talk time or 78 hours of audio playback so you won't need to fear being away from a charger for a couple of days.

A button on the rear of the case allows your to manually engage charging whenever you need some extra juice, and four LEDs on the back give you a quick look at how much power is remaining in the pack.

The slim design adds as little bulk as possible to your iPhone XR, while also allowing it to be easily removed simply by folding back to soft rubber top and sliding your iPhone right out, which may be necessary if you use a wired CarPlay system since the built-in Lightning port can only be used for charging the case and iPhone and for connecting a set of EarPods, not for data synchronization, and it also doesn't support pass-through Qi wireless charging. Nonetheless, it's a reasonable compromise considering this battery pack provides a good amount of power at a very affordable price.

Best for iPhone XS Max: ZeroLemon iPhone XS Max 5000mAh Battery Case

What We Like
  • Slim design

  • Apple Pay compatible

  • Good capacity

What We Don't Like
  • No pass-through audio

  • No wireless charging support

When you're already carrying Apple's largest iPhone, you don't want a battery case that adds more bulk that strictly necessary, and this is why ZeroLemon's 5000mAh ultra slim case makes a great choice, doubling the power available to your iPhone XS Max without doubling its size.

ZeroLemon's case will add another 25 hours of talk time, 15 hours of video playback, or 65 hours of audio playback to your iPhone, while also protecting it from everyday bumps, scratches, and drops, with full edge protection. Four LED lights provide a quick glance at how much battery is left in the case, and a one-press power button lets you easily toggle the battery pack on and off so you can save its power for when you need it the most.

Although this case is designed to make sure that it won't get in the way of Apple Pay contactless transactions, like most standard battery cases you won't be able to wirelessly charge your iPhone XS Max through it, and it also doesn't support traditional wired headphones, so you'll want to make sure you have a set of Apple's AirPods or other wireless earphones to use with this one.

Best for iPhone X / XS: Alpatronix 4200mAh Qi Compatible Battery Case for iPhone X & XS

What We Like
  • Slim design

  • Wireless charging support

  • Includes glass screen protector

What We Don't Like
  • Limited accessory compatibility

  • Micro USB connection

Alpatronix's 4200mAh battery case makes a great companion for both Apple's original 5.8-inch iPhone X and its follow-up iPhone XS, doubling your battery capacity in a case that's not only slim and stylish, but fully compatible with your iPhone's advanced features, from wireless charging to Apple Pay.

Adding less than four ounces to the weight of your iPhone, the Alpatronix case doesn't skimp on protection, with a raised bezel and even a tempered glass screen protector included to make sure you're covered on all sides. The included battery has enough juice to charge your iPhone from 0 to 100 percent with power to spare, and you can even charge the battery case and your iPhone at the same time from any Qi compatible wireless charger, or plug in a cable for even faster wired charging.

This particular case uses a micro USB port rather than a Lightning port, however, which will limit your accessory compatibility somewhat; for example, while it does support data transfer for syncing to your Mac or PC, you won’t be able to plug in a set of wired headphones.

Final Verdict

If you've got one of Apple's latest iPhone 12 models, then ZeroLemon and Alpatronix provide great early options, although there will likely be many more coming as the accessory market matures. For Apple's popular iPhone 11 model, however, it's very hard to go wrong with Apple's own Smart Battery Case, which integrates with the smartphone in ways that no other case maker can.

What to Look for in an iPhone Battery Case

Protection: As a rule, battery cases usually don't top the list of the most protective iPhone cases that you'll find, but that's no reason to give up on protection entirely. Look for a case that in the very least offers enough of a raised edge around the front screen to help protect it from face-down drops, and at least promises some shock protection.

Accessory Compatibility: Using a battery case may require you to give up on some compatibility with certain accessories and features. While all of the battery cases on our list work fine with Apple Pay, that's not necessarily the true of every case that you'll find, so make sure that your choice of case doesn't block the upper part of your iPhone where the NFC sensors are located. Wired accessory compatibility is another matter entirely, and as a rule if a case doesn't include a Lightning port it definitely won't work with Apple's EarPods or other wired earbuds, but even then you should double-check the specs to make sure that you won't need to take the case off to listen to music or connect it to your CarPlay system.

Wired or Wireless: Since battery cases by necessity include a big battery on the back of your iPhone, none of them will allow you to use a wireless charger to directly recharge your iPhone while it's in the case. Some, however, do provide the ability to charge their own battery wirelessly, which will in turn charge the iPhone that's in the case. On the flip side, you also need to decide whether you want a battery case that uses Qi technology to provide power to your iPhone or one that connects directly to the Lightning port; the former will usually leave the Lightning port free for other accessories, guaranteeing compatibility with things like EarPods and CarPlay, but since Qi charging is also less efficient, it won't be able to provide as much power to your iPhone as a wired case would.
