As with many modern smartphones, the HTC One  and HTC One Mini allow you to set up a daily backup of all your important data and settings. This not only ensures that you don't lose anything in the event that your phone dies, but it also means that getting set up again on a new HTC phone is easy. There are a few different ways to back up the different data and settings on your phone, and you may need to use more than one to ensure everything is safely backed up.

How to Set Up HTC Backup

This is the first step to making sure that your HTC One is backed up (the utility uses your free Dropbox storage to retain your content and settings). The in-built HTC Backup utility will enable you to backup and restore home screen settings, including your categories and headlines from BlinkFeed, your widgets and the layout of the home screen.

The second thing backed up are all of your accounts and passwords. HTC Backup can store log in details for your email account, social networks, apps such as Evernote and your Exchange ActiveSync server.

The final things backed up using this utility are your apps and settings. Settings backed up include your Internet bookmarks, any additions you have made to the personal dictionary, Wi-Fi network settings, and app display settings, as well as all of the apps you have installed. In total, more than 150 important settings will be backed up daily.

To begin using HTC Backup, either enable “Back up phone daily” during the setup of your HTC One, or enable the feature in the main settings. Go to Backup & Reset, and then tap Backup Account. Choose your HTC account from the list and sign in if required.

You may also be required to sign in to your Dropbox account if you are not already.

If you want your photos to be automatically saved to Dropbox as you take them, you can now tap to turn this feature on.

Back on the main Backup & reset screen, switch on Automatic Backup. Your HTC One will now create a daily backup as long as you have a Wi-Fi or 3G/4G connection. Remember that using the 3G/4G connection to backup may incur additional charges from your carrier.

How to Use HTC Sync Manager

Music, videos, calendar entries, documents, playlists and other data which is not backed up by HTC Backup, can be saved using the HTC Sync utility. HTC Sync is a separate piece of software which should be installed on your computer the first time you connect your HTC device to it via USB.

If the software does not install, you can download it yourself from the HTC support pages (www.htc.com/support). Launch the installer and follow the instructions to complete the installation. When you next connect your phone to your computer using USB, Sync Manager should automatically open.

You can easily set the HTC Sync Manager to import all of the music, photos, and videos found on your phone to your computer. First, connect your HTC One to your computer using the supplied USB cable. Then:

  • To copy music from your phone to your computer, click Music > Settings, and then select Copy all music from phone.
  • To copy photos and videos from your phone to your computer, click Gallery > Settings, and then select Automatically import photos and videos from phone.

If you are trying to create some extra space on your phone, you can select Delete photos and videos from phone after importing. This removes the media from your HTC One after they have been safely copied over. Click the Apply button to start the process.

Assuming this is the first time you have synced between your phone and your computer, click the Sync button to initiate the backup. You can simply repeat this process each time you connect your phone to your computer, or you can click More > Sync Settings, and select Sync automatically whenever the phone connects from the options available.
