How to Add Contacts Automatically in Yahoo Mail

Instead of adding Yahoo contacts the manual way, you can set up Yahoo Mail to automatically add contacts to your address book when you email someone new. If you decide you don't want a contact that was automatically added, you can delete it or shut off the automatic contact management feature altogether.

Instructions in this article apply to the standard web version of Yahoo Mail.

How to Set Up Automatic Address Book Assignment

Follow these steps to make Yahoo Mail create a new address book entry for each person you email:

  1. Select the Contacts icon at the top-right of Yahoo Mail.

  3. Select Writing email on the left side.

How to Edit or Delete Yahoo Mail Contacts

All of the automatically assigned Yahoo Mail contacts will appear in your contacts list, which is the same place your contacts go when you add them manually. Yahoo Mail doesn't treat them differently, so you can manage them the same way.

To edit or delete Yahoo Mail contacts:

  1. Select the Contacts icon at the top-right of Yahoo Mail.

  2. Select the contact you wish to edit.

    You can select multiple contacts or even all of them at once by checking the box at the very top of you contacts list.

  3. Select Delete from the top menu to remove the contact, or select Edit Details to make changes to it.

  4. Select Save to apply any modifications to your contacts.

The Actions menu in your Yahoo Mail address book provides additional options for managing contacts. For example, you can:

  • Sort your address book alphabetically by first name, last name, or email address.
  • Remove duplicate contacts
  • Print a list of all your contacts
  • Restore your address book from an automatic backup.
  • Import contacts from other websites like Facebook, Google, Outlook.com.
  • Import contacts from other email accounts or through a CSV or VCF file.
  • Export your Yahoo Mail contacts.
