Here is a look at the Display Link Manager menu that is loaded on your PC for use with the Atlona AT-AiR3.

The Display Link Manager provides several setting options for using the Atlona AT-HDAiR3, including the setting of both Extend and Mirror modes.

Extend Mode extends your Laptop or PC screen onto the connected display so that the Laptop/PC displays one portion the image and the connected large screen displays the other portion. This is good for watching video as you can move the video playback onto the portion of the screen that does not contain your other desktop screen icons.

The Mirror mode just duplicates your Laptop or PC screen onto the larger display so that all the desktop icons are shown on both displays. This setting also uses more video RAM than the Extend setting, which may affect DVD playback. It must be noted that Blu-ray Disc playback is not supported.

Also, you can also use the External Display Only mode which turns off the Laptop display and only displays the image on the larger connected display. This setting relieves some of the memory drain on the laptop and allows higher resolution display and easier playback of DVDs or other memory-hogging functions.

For a more detailed explanation of the other settings available via the Display Link Manager, refer to Atlona AT-AiR3, which can be downloaded from their Website

Atlona AT-AiR3 PC/Monitor Wireless Adapter - Laptop to HDTV Setup Example

Here is a look a the type of setup I used for this profile.

Shown is the AT-AiR3 transmitter inserted on one of the USB 2.0 ports on a laptop PC. Also shown on the shelf, just below the right side of the Westinghouse Digital LVM-37w3 1080p LCD Monitor is the AT-AiR3 wireless receiver which, in turn, is connected to the TV using the HDMI connection option.

As you can see the Laptop screen is displayed on the TV. The reason the laptop image does not fill the entire screen is because the output resolution of the laptop is 12080x1024 pixels and the TV is displaying that resolution without upscaling the image.

As you can see the Laptop screen is displayed on the TV.

Final Take

Setting up the Atlona AT-AiR3 was straight forward. The steps are: Install the software, connect the USB wireless transmitter to a USB port to a PC, connect the Wireless receiver to a VGA or HDMI-equipped TV, monitor, or projector. Then, turn your TV on, and your PC should automatically show an image on your TV. The displaylink software on the PC allows several image resolution and display adjustments.

Using either a Toshiba Satellite U205-S5044 Laptop PC, Sony VAIO VGC-RA826G Desktop PC, and a Westinghouse Digital LVM-37w3 1080p LCD Monitor both the video and audio came through as I had hoped.

However, one problem I encountered is that despite the 2GB RAM and 128MB video RAM available on my Toshiba Laptop, I still did not have enough memory capacity to play a DVD and display the image on the HDTV at the same time in Mirror Mode, but the DVD did play when using the Extend and External Display Only mode. I could however, display all of my other laptop functions and content using either Mirror, Extend, or External Display Only mode, including photos and videos stored on my Laptop hard drive or directly streamed from online sources, such as You Tube and Hulu.

Provided a Laptop or Desktop has enough memory to run a large screen HDTV, the Atlona AT-AiR3 provides an an easy, and affordable, way to integrate stored content or internet-streamed content from a PC into your home theater system without the need of a home network or HDMI or VGA cables. Also, the entire AT-AiR3 kit is very compact and can easily be packed along with Laptop PC accessories when traveling, whether to aid in a business presentation or going on vacation. Just keep in mind that when playing a DVD on your PC DVD drive, you may encounter memory or driver issues depending the display settings used.
