Everyone has their favorite messaging platform. Some people like Facebook Messenger, while others prefer Snapchat, and still others like to use Kik, Telegram or WhatsApp. But what if you want to chat with someone for the first time using your favorite app? If they are not already in your buddy list, you may need to follow a few steps the first time you begin chatting with them.

Before you start, you may want to make sure that your friend has your favorite messaging app installed.

You won't be able to find your friends on Facebook or Snapchat if they don't have an account (although with the popularity of these messaging apps its more than likely that they are already do!)

Here you'll find a quick rundown of everything you need to know to start chatting with friends using popular messaging applications, Facebook Messenger and Snapchat.

How to Add and Message Contacts on Facebook

Want to chat on Facebook Messenger with someone who you are not Facebook friends with? Just follow these simple steps:

  • Log on to Facebook via the web at www.facebook.com or via the app on your mobile phone
  • Tap or click into the search bar at the top of the screen
  • Enter the name of the person that you'd like to chat with
  • A list of people with that name will appear. Click or tap on the correct person to go to their page.
  • Depending on your friend's privacy settings, you may see options to "Add Friend," and "Message." Adding that person as a friend will make it easier to chat with them later, and you'll each be able to see each other's pages as well. However, if you are messaging someone that you don't talk to frequently, or don't want to add as a friend, you can choose "Message" to chat with them.

How to Add and Message Contacts on Snapchat

There are four ways to add contacts on Snapchat. Start by opening the app and tapping the ghost icon at the top of the screen. From there, tap the "Add Friends" option. Here, you can choose from four options.

    • Add by Username: In some cases Snapchat usernames are the actual name of the person who holds the account — but just as often, they're not. Sometimes Snapchat screen names are silly, or goofy (like Kylie Jenner going by the name "King Kylie," which makes it difficult to find people. To add someone by user name, try typing in their name, or even better, just ask them.
    • Add from Address Book: Perhaps the easiest way to add buddies on Snapchat, tapping this option will enable Snapchat to go through your address book and find people who have accounts on Snapchat.
• Add by Snapcode: You can add buddies by scanning in their Snapcode. According to Snapchat, Snapcodes are "unique, scannable codes that make adding new Snapchat friends and opening Snapchat content even easier." To add a friend by using their Snapcode, ask them to send it to you (click on the ghost at the top of Snapchat, locate your Snapcode and tap on it to activate sharing options), or take a photo of it from their phone.
    • Once you've added your buddy, tap on the square icon on the lower left of the main screen, scroll to find your friend (or use the search bar at the top), and swipe right to access the chat screen and begin chatting.
