The Bottom Line

Apr 2, 2014 - Acer's Predator 3 models continue their refinement to make them excellent low-cost desktop gaming systems. Now the systems feature graphics that are fully capable of 1080p gaming. The changes did mean that a few things had to be sacrificed including the hard drive that offers limited storage space and expansion and more restricted internal expansion capability. This is compensated somewhat by the company's inclusion of their hard drive bay for easy storage expansion. Overall, if you want a low-cost gaming system that you won't be modifying much, it is hard to beat the value that Acer provides in this system.

Review - Acer Predator AG3-605-UR38

Apr 2, 2014 - The Acer Predator AG3 series is the company's gaming specific desktop model. The AG3-605-UR38 is one of the more affordable options available and can be consistently found for under $1000. The system offers a bit of style with the red trim around the drives and front bezel but it is fairly restrained compared to many gaming systems. It is nice to see the front peripheral ports on the top and angled as this makes them very convenient for those that keep the system below their desk.

Powering the Acer Predator AG3-605-UR38 is the Intel Core i7-4770 quad-core processor. This is currently the fastest of the Intel desktop LGA 1150 processors but it will probably be replaced soon with a slightly faster version. Should you wait for the new processor, probably not as it isn't going to have a major impact on the majority of applications that are limited by other factors such as drive speeds or memory. The processor still provides more than enough speed for the average user including demanding tasks such as desktop video editing or PC gaming. The processor is matched up with 8GB of DDR3 memory that provides a smooth overall experience and is a good choice as few applications will benefit from extra memory. If you do need more, there are two available slots for upgrading the memory.

Storage for the Acer Predator AG3-605-UR38 is a bit disappointing but not uncommon for a gaming class system in its price range. It features a one terabyte hard drive that should provide a good amount of storage but there are a number of systems that offer twice the storage at the same price point. Performance is decent but it isn't as swift as the Acer Aspire AT3 which features a small solid state drive for caching that makes loading the operating system or applications faster. To make up for this, though, Acer does offer an internal 3.5-inch drive cage that can be used to easily add an internal SATA hard drive for extra capacity. The system does also feature four USB 3.0 ports for external storage options. There is a dual layer DVD burner included for playback and recording of CD or DVD media.

As this is a gaming system, the Predator AG3-605-UR38 does come with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 graphics card. This is a good mid-range card that should provide solid performance up to the 1920x1080 resolution for PC gaming. The only downside here is that the card uses 1.5GB of video memory which is less than some others. The result is that it is not as well suited for adding in many filtering effects with PC games. The graphics card also does not have as much performance for those that might want to use it for crypto-coin mining compared to an AMD based graphics card but it does offer solid performance for many other non-3D gaming applications. For those that would look to upgrade it, there is a 500-watt power supply that will allow the use of higher end graphics cards. The one drawback is that it only has a single graphics card slot so there is no option for a dual-graphics card setup.

Pricing for the Acer Predator AG3-605-UR38 ranges between $900 and $1000 in most cases. This makes it one of the most affordable gaming systems with its features. The closest in terms of features would be the ASUS G10AC system that has the same video card, hard drive size and RAM but it only comes with the Core i5-4570 quad-core processor at just below $1000. The ASUS does have the advantage of coming with the newer 802.11ac wireless networking instead of the more standard 802.11a/g/n and it features six instead of four USB 3.0 ports. If you don't necessarily need the graphics process, Acer even has their Aspire AT3 desktop that features twice the RAM and hard drive space plus the SD cache for faster general performance but it is not suited for gaming.
