The Bottom Line

Oct 20 2010 - Acer's Aspire X3910 slim desktop certainly has an affordable price tag and can be found for between $450 and $500. Performance is decent as are the storage features but they don't really set themselves apart from other budget desktops. What this system does offer is wireless networking and lots of USB ports for external expansion. This is important since internal expansion is extremely limited due the size of the system.

Guide Review - Acer Aspire AX3910-U2032 Budget Desktop PC

Oct 20 2010 - Acer's Aspire AX3910-U2032 takes their standard slim desktop design but with a price tag that comes in under $500. Rather than using the newer Intel Core 2010 series processors, it uses an Intel Pentium E6600 dual core processor that is based only the older Core 2 designs. This means that perform does trail behind systems that cost just a bit more but it is fairly typical of the budget desktop market. It does come with 4GB of DDR3 memory to prevent it from hitting many slowdowns from multitasking.

Storage features for the Aspire AX3910-U2032 are common of a budget laptop. It use a 640GB hard drive to provide a fair amount of space for applications, data and media files. There are similarly prices systems with some larger drives. A standard dual layer DVD burner handles playback and recording of CDs or DVDs. The lower front panel also includes a multi-card reader that supports the most popular forms of flash media cards.

Graphics are handled by the Intel GMA X4500HD integrated graphics processor. This is certainly fine for anyone planning on using the system for basic productivity, web and even HD video work. Anyone considering it for use as a PC gaming platform will be disappointed to learn that it doesn't even have sufficient 3D performance for even basic casual PC gaming.

One of the big issues with the Acer Aspire AX3910-U2032 is its limited space for upgrades. There isn't really any room for any additional hard drives as they are buried under the optical drive. The motherboard does feature a single available PCI-Express graphics card slot but the space prohibits it to be only a single slot width card. In addition, the power supply is a very meager 220 watt model which prevents many mid to high end graphics cards.

What the Aspire AX3910-U2032 does provide over many other budget desktops is wireless networking. Included with the system is a PCI-Express based 802.11b/g/n wireless networking card. This allows the system to be easily integrated into a wireless home network. Not even the higher performance AX3950 from Acer comes with this feature.

Finally, buyers should expect to take some time after purchase to clear out the large amount of trialware applications that Acer installs in pretty much all of their computers these days. They don't really impact the system performance much beyond maybe delaying boot times slightly but they take a fair amount of space and clutter the desktop and start menus.
