You may have fond memories of hearing "You've Got Mail" whenever you logged into AOL. If so, you should be happy to know that your AOL mail can be accessed from your Mac using Apple's Mail app.

Although it was once a closed system, all you need now to access an AOL email account is an internet connection and a web browser, which makes it an especially handy service for frequent travelers.

When you're at home, though, you may find it annoying to keep both the Mail app and a web browser open, just to make sure you receive all your daily email. It's much easier to use a single application, and it certainly makes keeping your mail organized a much easier task.

You can create an account in the Apple Mail application on your Mac specifically for accessing AOL email.

Recent versions of Mail are preconfigured to accommodate email from other popular email providers, including AOL.

Setting Up AOL in Mail 3.x or Later

  4. Enter your password and click Sign In.

  5. Read the information on the screen and agree to the AOL terms by clicking Agree. That’s all there is to it. Mail is ready to grab your AOL email.

Setting Up AOL in Mail 2.x

The process of creating an AOL email account in Mail 2.x is similar to using the recent versions, but you are asked to enter specific information, just as you would any other IMAP-based email account. Here are the settings and information you need to enter:

  • Account type: Select IMAP.
  • Email address: aolusername@aol.com
  • Password: Enter your AOL password.
  • User name: Your AOL email address without the @aol.com.
  • Incoming Mail Server: imap.aol.com.

After you supply the above information, Mail can access your AOL email account.
