How to Access Outlook.com in Postbox

Want to search mail fast locally? Want to know that your messages are safe and secure with you at all times? Prefer Postbox, generally, to Outlook.com on the web? Want, merely, to fetch newly arriving messages and send new emails and replies, and to get access to all your online folders and synchronize multiple Postbox installations?

Whichever your reasons for wanting to access Outlook.com in Postbox, setting it up as a free POP is a snap. (For Windows Live Hotmail accounts, seamless IMAP account (using a third-party service) is also available.)

Access Outlook.com in Postbox Using POP (Free)

To set up an Outlook.com account for downloading new messages (via free POP access) and sending mail in Postbox:

  • Select Postbox | Preferences… from the menu in Postbox.
  • Go to the Accounts tab.
  • Click + beneath the accounts list.
  • Select Add Mail Account… from the list that comes up.
  • Type your name (or what you want to appear in the From: line of emails you send using the Outlook.com account) under Your Name:.
  • Enter your Outlook.com address under Email Address:.
  • Now enter an Outlook.com application password or your Outlook.com password under Password:.
  • Click Continue.
  • Verify:
    • Your full Outlook.com address is entered under User Name: for Incoming Server.
    • "pop3.live.com" is entered under Server Name: for Incoming Server.
    • POP is selected under Type for Incoming Server.
    • "995" is entered under Port: for Incoming Server.
    • SSL/TLS is selected under Security for Incoming Server.
    • "smtp.live.com" is entered under Server Name: for Outgoing Server.
    • "587" is entered under Port: for Outgoing Server.
    • STARTTLS (not SSL/TLS) is selected under Security for Outgoing Server.
  • Click Done.

Access Windows Live Hotmail in Postbox Using IMAP (via IzyMail)

To set up Windows Live Hotmail as an IMAP account (including live access to online folders and automatic synchronization) in Postbox using IzyMail:

  • Make sure to register your Windows Live Hotmail account with IzyMail.
  • Select Postbox | Preferences… from your Postbox's menu.
  • Open the Accounts tab.
  • Click + below the list of incoming and outgoing mail servers.
  • Select Add Mail Account… from the menu that appears.
  • Enter your name (you can also choose a role or title, of course, or whatever you wish to show in the From: line of emails you send using the Windows Live Hotmail account) under Your Name:.
  • Type your Windows Live Hotmail address under Email Address:.
  • Enter, finally, your Windows Live Hotmail password under Password:.
  • For enhanced security, you can make sure Remember password is not checked; you will have to type your Windows Live Hotmail password constantly, though.
  • Click Manual Setup →.
  • Type your full Windows Live Hotmail address under User Name: for Incoming Server.
  • Enter "in.izymail.com" (not including the quotation marks) under Server Name: for Incoming Server.
  • Make sure IMAP is selected under Type: for Incoming Server.
  • Verify "143" (excluding the quotation marks) is entered under Port: for Incoming Server.
  • Make sure None is selected under Security: for Incoming Server.
  • Enter "out.izymail.com" (again disregarding the quotation marks) under Server Name: for Outgoing Server.
  • Enter "587" (excluding, of course, the quotation marks) under Port: for Outgoing Server.
  • Make sure None is selected under Security: for Outgoing Server.
  • Click Done.
