How to Access an Email Account in Outlook Express

The web-based interface to your account has everything an email user needs — except stationery, of course; or the convenience of reading and replying to email during long flights and offline, for example.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could download your messages to Outlook Express and send from the latter with your address? It will be nice, because setting this up is a snap.

Access an Email Account in Outlook Express

To set up your account in Outlook Express:

  • Make sure POP access is enabled in
  • Select Tools | Accounts... from the menu in Outlook Express.
  • Click Add and choose Mail....
  • Type your name.
  • Click Next >.
  • Enter your email address.
  • Click Next >.
  • Make sure POP3 is selected under My incoming mail server is a __ server.
  • Type "" under Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server:.
  • Type "" under Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:, too.
  • Click Next >.
  • Enter your full address (e.g. "") under Account name:.
  • Type your password under Password:.
  • Click Next >.
  • Click Finish.
  • Highlight the new account.
  • Click Properties.
  • Go to the Servers tab.
  • Make sure My server requires authentication is checked under Outgoing Mail Server.
  • Click OK.
  • Click Close.
