How to Access Free Windows Live Hotmail in Outlook Express

You can set up a Windows Live Hotmail account in Outlook Express and access all your emails as well as the folders you have created.

Windows Live Hotmail Comes to Outlook Express in Many Ways

If you have a paid subscription to Windows Live Hotmail (or MSN Hotmail), you can access your Windows Live Hotmail account with Outlook Express in a very comfortable and highly functional way that provides seamless access to any folder and your Windows Live Hotmail address book, too.

But a subscription is not the only way to access a Windows Live Hotmail account in Outlook Express. There are tools and services that translate between the web-based interface of Windows Live Hotmail and POP, which allows Outlook Express to download messages from Windows Live Hotmail like from any other email account.

These tools include the free FreePOPs, which is available for a range of operating systems, turns Windows Live Hotmail into an IMAP service, and, of course, Windows Live Hotmail’s own IMAP access.

Access Free Windows Live Hotmail in Outlook Express as an IMAP Account

To add a Windows Live Hotmail account to Outlook Express using its native IMAP access:

  1. Select Tools | Accounts… from the menu in Outlook Express.
  2. Click Add.
  3. Now select Mail….
  4. Enter your full name—or what you want to appear in the From: line when you send mail from the Windows Live Hotmail account—under Display name:.
  5. Click Next >.
  1. Enter your full Windows Live Hotmail address (something like "example@hotmail.com") under E-mail address:.
  2. Click Next >.
  3. Make sure IMAP is selected under My incoming mail server is a __ server.
  4. Type "imap-mail.outlook.com" in the Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server: field.
  5. Enter "smtp-mail.outlook.com" under Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:.
  1. Click Next >.
  2. Enter your full Windows Live Hotmail address under Account name: ("example@hotmail.com", for instance).
  3. Type your Windows Live Hotmail password (or an application password) in the Password: field.
  4. Click Next > again.
  5. Click Finish.
  6. Highlight imap-mail.outlook.com in the Internet Accounts window.
  7. Click Properties.
  8. Go to the Servers tab.
  9. Make sure My server requires authentication is checked under Outgoing Mail Server.
  10. Go to the Advanced tab.
  11. Make sure This server requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked under both Outgoing mail (SMTP): and Incoming mail (IMAP):.
  12. Type "587" under Outgoing server (SMTP):.
    • If the number under Incoming server (IMAP): has not been changed to "993" automatically, enter "993" there.
  13. Click OK.
  14. Click Close in the Internet Accounts window.
  15. Now, select Yes to download the list of Windows Live Hotmail folders to Outlook Express.
  16. Click OK.

Access Free Windows Live Hotmail in Outlook Express with IzyMail

To set up IMAP access to your Windows Live Hotmail service using IzyMail:

  1. Make sure your Windows Live Hotmail or MSN Hotmail account is registered with IzyMail.
  2. Select Tools | Accounts... from the menu in Outlook Express.
  3. Click Add.
  4. Choose Mail....
  5. Enter your name.
  6. Click Next.
  1. Enter your Windows Live Hotmail address ("user@hotmail.com", for example).
  2. Click Next.
  3. Make sure IMAP is selected under My incoming mail server is a __ server.
  4. Type "in.izymail.com" in the Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server: field.
  5. Enter "out.izymail.com" under Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:.
  6. Click Next >.
  7. Type your full Windows Live Hotmail or MSN Hotmail address under Account name: (e.g. "user@hotmail.com").
  8. Enter your Windows Live Hotmail or MSN Hotmail password under Password:.
  9. Click Next >.
  10. Click Finish.
  11. Highlight in.izymail.com in the Internet Accounts window.
  12. Click Properties.
  13. Go to the Servers tab.
  1. Make sure My server requires authentication is checked under Outgoing Mail Server.
  2. Go to the IMAP tab.
  3. Make sure Store special folders on IMAP server is not checked.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Click Close in the Internet Accounts window.
  6. Now, select Yes to download the list of Windows Live Hotmail folders to Outlook Express.
  7. Click OK.

Access Free Windows Live Hotmail in Outlook Express with FreePOPs

To access a free Windows Live Hotmail account in Outlook Express using the local FreePOPs tool:

  1. Install FreePOPs.
  2. Select All Programs | FreePOPs | FreePOPs from the Start menu.
  3. Start Outlook Express.
  4. Select Tools | Accounts... from the menu in Outlook Express.
  5. Click Add and select Mail....
  6. Type your name.
  7. Click Next >.
  8. Enter your Windows Live Hotmail address ("example@hotmail.com", for example).
  9. Click Next > again.
  10. Make sure POP3 is selected under My incoming mail server is a ___ server.
  11. Enter "localhost" under Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server:.
    • If you run into problems with "localhost", you can try "127.0.0.1" instead.
  12. Type your ISP's mail server under Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:.
    • Typically, you will use the same server you use for your other non-Windows Live Hotmail email account.
  13. Click Next >.
  14. Type your full Windows Live Hotmail address under Account name:.
  15. Enter your Windows Live Hotmail password under Password:.
  16. Click Next >.
  17. Click Finish.
  18. Highlight the newly created Windows Live Hotmail account in the Internet Accounts list.
  19. Click Properties.
  20. Go to the Advanced tab.
  21. Enter "2000" under Server Port Numbers | Incoming mail (POP3):.
  1. Click OK.
  2. Now click Close.

You can even fetch messages from any Windows Live Hotmail folder by changing the settings a bit.
