How to Access Free Windows Live Hotmail in Windows Mail

Windows Live Hotmail was discontinued a few years ago in favor of Outlook Live, where you can still. access all your mail. This article is presented here for archival purposes.

Sure, you could use Windows Live Mail to access your Windows Live Hotmail account outside the browser, or maybe Outlook.

But Outlook is big, and Windows Live Mail seems a bit confused. No, Windows Mail is your program.

Access Free Windows Live Hotmail in Windows Mail Using POP

To add a free Windows Live Hotmail account to Windows Mail for sending and receiving messages:

  • Select Tools | Accounts... from the menu in Windows Mail.
  • Click Add...
  • Make sure E-mail Account is highlighted.
  • Click Next.
  • Enter your full name under Display Name:
  • Click Next.
  • Type your Windows Live Hotmail address under E-mail address:
  • Click Next.
  • Make sure POP3 is selected under Incoming e-mail server type:
  • Type pop3.live.com under Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server:
  • Enter smtp.live.com under Outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) name:
  • Make sure Outgoing server requires authentication is checked.
  • Click Next.
  • Type your full Windows Live Hotmail email address (e.g. "me@hotmail.com" or "me@live.com") under E-mail username:
  • Enter your Windows Live Hotmail password under Password:
  • Click Next.
  • Make sure Do not download my e-mail at this time is checked.
  • Click Finish.
  • Highlight the pop3.live.com account.
  • Click Properties.
  • Go to the Advanced tab.
  • Make sure This server requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked under both Outgoing mail (SMTP): and Incoming mail (POP3):
  • Type 587 under Outgoing server (SMTP):
    • If the number under Incoming server (POP3): is not 995, enter 995 there.
  • Click OK.
  • Click Close.

Access Free Windows Live Hotmail in Windows Mail with FreePOPs

To set up a free Windows Live Hotmail account in Windows Mail using FreePOPs:

  • Install FreePOPs and make sure it is running.
  • Select Tools | Accounts... from the menu in Windows Mail.
  • Click Add...
  • Make sure E-mail Account is highlighted.
  • Click Next.
  • Type your name under Display name:
  • Click Next.
  • Type your Windows Live Hotmail address excluding the final ".com" under E-mail address:
    • If your Windows Live Hotmail address is "samsample@hotmail.com", for example, enter "samsample@hotmail".
  • Click Next.
  • Make sure POP3 is selected under Incoming e-mail server type:
  • Type localhost (excluding the quotation marks) under Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server:
  • Enter your ISP's mail server under Outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) name:
    • Typically, you'll use the same server you use for your other non-Windows Live Hotmail email account.
  • Click Next.
  • Enter your full Windows Live Hotmail address under E-mail username:
  • Type your Windows Live Hotmail password under Password:
  • Click Next.
  • Make sure Do not download my e-mail at this time is checked.
  • Click Finish.
  • Now make sure the new account (probably named "localhost") is highlighted.
  • Click Properties.
  • Go to the General tab.
  • Append .com to your Windows Live Hotmail address under E-mail address: to complete it.
  • Go to the Advanced tab.
  • Enter 2000 in the Incoming mail (POP3): field, replacing the default "110" that has been pre-entered.
  • Click OK.
  • Now click Close.

By but changing your user name, you can download from other Windows Live Hotmail folders than your Inbox, too.
