Officially known as the AirPlus G DWL-G730AP Wireless Pocket Router/AP, this router features three different modes configured by a mechanical switch. In locations having only wired Ethernet connections such as hotels or schools, you can set the switch for either router or access point mode. You can also configure it to connect wirelessly to a WiFi hotspot. The DWL-G730AP measures 3.15 in x 2.36 in x 0.67in (80mm x 60mm x17mm) and weighs less than 2 ounces (50g), making it one of the smallest travel routers available. Power over USB support is an added bonus. D-Link offers a one year warranty for this product.

Linksys WTR54GS

Many people confuse this product with the similarly named WRT54GS, but the WTR54GS is Linksys' mobile wireless router. It offers roughly the same level of router functionality (including security support) as the mainstream units. The WTR54GS also includes SpeedBooster technology that may improve the performance of file transfers compared to other standard 802.11g routers. It is larger than most other travel routers, but not by much, measuring 4.21in x 2.87in x 1.22in (107mm x 73mm x 31mm). Linksys provides a three-year warranty for the WTR54GS.

Asus WL-530g

Especially popular in Asia, the Asus WL-530g Compact Wireless Router possesses a unique form factor. At 5.1in x 1.7in x 1.1in (129mm x 44mm x 29mm), it resembles a large harmonica. This product also has received some praise for its usability. Instead of a mechanical switch like some other products in this category, the WL-530g automatically configures its mode of operation by detecting whether a wired Ethernet connection is present. Check with the manufacturer and reseller for terms of warranty.
