1,500 Ringtones Unlimited IPhone App Review

This review refers to version 3.1 of this app. Details and specifics of the app may have changed in later versions.

The Good

  • Plenty of funny sounds
  • Good selection of caller ID ringtones

The Bad

  • May not really be 1,500 ringtones
  • No popular songs included
  • Can't make custom ringtones

1,500 Ringtones Unlimited is worth a look if you don’t want to bother with creating your own ringtones from your existing music library. The app has a good selection of premade funny sounds, alarm tones, and caller ID ringtones for you to choose from, but you won’t find any popular songs here and you can't use the app to create your own ringtones.

Types of Ringtones Available

Unlike most ringtone apps, which help you create ringtones from existing music, 1,500 Ringtones Unlimited bypasses the creation process. However, if you think that means you won’t have to sync with iTunes to get ringtones onto your phone—a common complaint about ringtone apps—think again. Some people think that is a real pain, but it's a necessary evil. Sorry!

1,500 Ringtones Unlimited has a fun and flashy interface that is easy to use. The ringtones are divided into categories, and the wide variety of sounds is pretty impressive. You can find everything from caller ID sounds (‘Mom is calling’) to fart noises or gunshots.

On the other hand, I was a little disappointed that the app doesn’t include any music ringtones. There are music beats, which are OK, but you won’t find any popular songs to use as ringtones. That is probably because of copyright issues, but it’s a bummer nonetheless. As a side note, 1,500 Ringtones Unlimited includes a good amount of ringtones—more than I wanted to count, for sure—but I think it is far less than 1,500.

Transferring Ringtones From the App to Your Phone

Once you find a ringtone you like, click the download button and enter your email address. The app sends you the ringtone via email, along with instructions on how to get it onto your iPhone. This isn't completely unusual, but I would feel a lot better about handing over my email address if there was a visible privacy policy listed.

As with other ringtone apps, you must then sync with iTunes to get the ringtone onto your iPhone. All of my ringtones transferred with no problem. I also like that you can create as many ringtones as you want without paying additional fees.

A Few Notes Since the Original Review

This review was first published in March 2011. Since that time, a few things about the app that are worth noting have changed:

  • Ringtones are no longer emailed. They're now saved to your iPhone, but you still need to sync with a computer in order to enable them to be used as ringtones.
  • An in-app purchase has added the ability to make custom ringtones from the music on your iPhone. The app now combines its library of premade tones with the custom editor.
  • Free daily ringtones are now available.
  • The reviews are just so-so. The current version has an average rating of 3 stars, which matches the app's all-time star rating. That's OK, but there are definitely higher-rated ringtone apps out there.

The Bottom Line

1,500 Ringtones Unlimited is a good choice if you want sounds (fart noises, gunshots, alarm tones, etc.) or caller ID audio to use as ringtones. The ringtones save properly and I had no trouble transferring them to my iPhone. Sound quality is good, too. However, something like Ringtone Designer Pro is a better bet if you prefer custom music ringtones because 1,500 Ringtones Unlimited is lacking in this area. Overall rating: 4 stars out of 5.

What You’ll Need
