Qualifications

LifeWire, an online content startup from The New York Times Company, is seeking a freelance, part-time line editor to work remotely. The line editor will edit informative and practical articles on a range of topics including relationships, the environment, health, home and garden, consumer technology, autos, travel, personal finance, parenting, small business and education. If you're a fast, meticulous editor who can consistently meet tight deadlines and handle lots of copy, you're halfway there. If you have experience editing any of the subjects mentioned above, knowledge of Associated Press style, a flair for headline writing and fine-tuning copy and want to help build a new business, contact us.

Responsibilities

  • Line edit and rewrite copy for tone, content, organization, clarity, accuracy and length.
  • Handle numerous 100- to 1,000-word articles each week.
  • Conduct additional research and check facts using the Internet, other reference materials and by contacting writers.
  • When necessary, write headlines and ensure that photo illustrations, captions and text match.
  • Use Web-based content management system to line edit and classify articles.

Requirements

  • At least three years experience as a freelance or full-time line editor for a daily news organization, magazine, Web site or related publisher.
  • Strong news judgment.
  • An obsession with detail and hitting deadlines.
  • Familiarity with Associated Press style.
  • Sophisticated understanding of how to find news and information online and off.
  • Experience line editing articles about the topics listed above strongly preferred.
  • Knack for learning new topics quickly.
  • Skill collaborating with freelance writers to enhance their work.
  • Degree in journalism, communications or English preferred.
  • Strong computer skills including editing online, using publishing tools and communicating with instant messenger.
